Book Description

Man Meets Ball

The all-brain cyborg known as Ball and I are old friends. We met as big-game hunters, stalking the most vicious creature in the Universe'the Pondoro Wolverine, also known as the greer.

Now we're on the planet Ptolemy for an even more dangerous contest'a ritual renga competition (plus a little sport shooting of dragons). First prize is a parasitic life-form with hyper-Newtonian communicative abilities.

The loser gets Death.

The winner gets to envy the loser.

And the game is about to begin....

Simply Ball

A silver meteor appeared among the circling squadron of giant dragons. One dragon fell, its tucked wings splayed open, like a parachute. Another dropped like a stone, and the rest scattered in fleeing dives.

Sun glinted on a bright speck, which floated lazily down and paused just above the deck.

"Simply Ball!"

"And just in time, too," came the rejoinder. "I should have known better than to imagine you could stay out of trouble here, Ramsey."

I lowered my gun. "Nice to see you, too," I said.

4.0 out of 5 stars The multinationals are out to get YOU, August 31, 1998

This review is from: Blood Lines (Vol. 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
In the last book in this series, we are introduced to Kieth Ramsey who is a burned out journalist/writer. His experiences then give rise to this book.

Ball is Ramsey's kinda friend and a cyborg of the first water. Ball is also a secret agent for the Dominion. His reasons for doing things are so obscure that he has lost track of what the goal was in the first place and so have his urstwhile employers. The number of ups and downs and ins and outs in this book are excessive. Nothing is as it seems. I finally decided that a journalist thrown into the politicts of the Congo would write the same type of book.

Make no mistake, this is an interesting book. Its only flaw is that the worldweary tone grates on you are a while. The author's belief that a major corporation would stake everything on one roll of the dice: if the corporation wins it will have total power or loses and is totally destroyed is a shakey premise.

4.0 out of 5 stars After this 'poetry' contest, civilization may not survive, August 4, 1998
This review is from: Blood Lines (Vol. 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Keith Ramsey, a famous reporter for Associated News, is on the planet Ptolemy for the annual renga poetry competition. But poetry, like all endeavors on Ptolemy is taken seriously, it's not uncommon for losers to opt for death if their entries were considered unsatisfactory. And than there is the presence on planet of 'Simply Ball' a cybernetic construct that was once the best agent of the empire's intelligence service. Following two unsuccessful assignation attempts, Keith is beginning to wonder what the real story is, or if he will live to write it...

A continuation of a book I never read, (BLOODSPORT). But the characters are good enough that I'm going to look for it. This one is a good book even as a stand alone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, bad story, November 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Blood Lines (Vol. 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Although the idea of a sentient virus trying to take over the hegemony in the universe is a nice idea, the people remain flat and the surroundings rather vaque. The story is more the story of the idea than an elaboration put in a believable world. I would not recomment this book to readers who like depth in characters and color in surroundings.
