First a quick caveat - the author is my cousin, and I had never heard this family story until she started researching it. I've been following her updates, and eagerly awaiting her book, and I was not disappointed. Carolyn does a great job making the historical setting com ealive, and the characters are very well drawn. She's got the vast majority of the period details down perfectly, and makes this time period come alive. I found myself sitting at Panera for about an hour after I finished my lunch one day, because I couldn't put the story down to move on to other things. If you enjoy historical fiction, I think you'll enjoy this book!

My husband and I loved reading about this family in the way the author, Carolyn Howard decided to write about them. Once either of us started reading it we just couldn't put it down. In fact it was watching my husband well up in tears that made me pick it up all the sooner as he finished it. Sure he's welled up with tears at the end of a movie before (shhhh don't tell him I told you) but never when reading a book. I found myself getting caught too and had to wipe away tears. If you have ever done genealogy or thought about it or just like reading stories based on true events then this book is for you. I'm looking forward to reading this author's next book.

I loved reading about names, places I know. When I was reading this book I felt like I was there with them. Plus there were a few pictures of the family. At the end was a list of the families and who they married. After reading "Blood" I wanted to trace my family history.

I was surprised at how well it read. I was kind of expecting it to be a bit dry. There are some books that just grab you and suck you in - which is exactly what this one did. I was surprised by the brutality of the murder, and the jars Sarah kept was a nice touch. One of the best things this book does, is that it has the family names listed at the beginning of chapters. With the characters evolving and continuing, it's handy to have that in case you forget how people are related.

Blood of My Ancestor, by Carolyn Howard, is the real-life story about the intersecting lives of three families in pioneer Indiana. At the center of it all is Joel Lyon, an extraordinary man, whose life and choices had a profound effect on many people he came in contact with.

This story runs the gamut from beautiful love story, to abuse, betrayal, and murder. Ms. Howard's descriptions of places and events paint a vivid picture of what it must have been like in 19th century, rural Indiana. Her characters are so full of life that I couldn't help but fall in love with them. I started reading Blood of My Ancestor near bed-time, and at the end of every chapter I told myself "just one more." However, Ms. Howard's writing just kept pulling me farther and farther into the tangled lives of the Lyons, Goldsberrys and Howards making it impossible to put the story down. In the wee hours of the morning, I finished the book, wiped the tears from my eyes, and finally went to bed.

I highly recommend Blood of My Ancestor to anyone who loves a good read, and I hope to have the pleasure of reading many more books by this author in the future.

Being from the area of the setting of this book, it is hard to believe that such a horrendous crime occurred. Once I began reading Blood of my Ancestor, I finished it in just a 24-hour period. Carolyn Howard did a great job piecing together the history of her ancestors and putting together a great story. I truly enjoyed it.

This book is about my ancestors. It opened my eyes to information that I did not have. Even though it is only based on fact, it was very interesting and I will be buying the hard copy.
