More About the Author

Weston Ochse is the author of more than twenty books, most recently two SEAL Team 666 books, which the New York Post called 'required reading' and USA Today placed on their 'New and Notable Lists,' and his military sci fi novel Grunt Life. His first novel, Scarecrow Gods, won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in First Novel and his short fiction has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His work as appeared in comic books, and magazines such as Cemetery Dance and Soldier of Fortune.

His work has been lauded by Joe R. Lansdale, Peter Straub, Kevin J. Anderson, John Skipp, Brian Keene, Jonathan Maberry, and many more, including the New York Times, New York Post, Washington Post, Denver Post, The Financial Times of London, and The Examiner (UK).

His last name is pronounced "oaks." Together with his first name, it sounds like a stately trailer park. He lives in the Arizona desert within rock throwing distance of Mexico. For fun he races tarantula wasps and watches the black helicopters dance along the horizon. He is a military veteran with 29 years of military service and recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan.

Format: Paperback
First off, I have a nit to pick. Writer Weston Ochse commits one of my pet peeves in the first few pages (and on the back cover) of "Blood Ocean." He names his floating city "Nomi no Toshi" and says this means "City on the Waves" in Japanese. It doesn't. "Nomi no Toshi" could mean "The City of Drinking," but even that is a stretch. The word he is looking for is "Nami," not "Nomi." It's a single letter, but its like the difference between wove and wave; it matters. If you are going to use an unfamiliar foreign language to decorate your book, make sure you get it right. Because someone like me who speaks the language is going to call you out on it. OK, rant finished.

"Blood Ocean" is like a fun B-movie in book form. One you get past the bad special effects, amateurish acting, and paper-thin plot, you can just shut off your brain and have a good time. I actually enjoyed this much better than I thought I would. The book has some ridiculously aggrandizing cover quotes-- "Weston is one of the best authors of our generation" - by people I have never heard of, which is usually the hallmark of a bad book. But then I remembered that "Blood Ocean" is published by Abaddon Books, the fiction arm of 2000 AD makers of Judge Dredd comics, and that bombast is just part of the fun.

"Blood Ocean" is set in the "Afterblight" shared-universe of Abaddon Books, a post-apocalyptic post-vague plague world where everyone is dead except O-negative blood types. In only twenty years since the event, civilization has devolved beyond recognition.

This Afterblight book is set on a floating city made up of a tied-together armada of fishing boats, scientific vessels, and nuclear submarines.

This book captured my attention from the first glance at the cover. incredible story telling by Weston Ochse allows you to see what is going on in the minds of the characters, and feel the happiness in their heart just before it's ripped out of their chest.

Blood Ocean is an incredible, and fast paced imaginative story, that will keep you reading long past your bedtime.
