Glorious goth, stunning vocal artistery,

This review is from: Blood of Bacchus (Audio CD)
The Portuguese-Norwegian band Ava Inferi may be labeled as goth metal, but really there scope is far beyond that. Making some highly unique and captivating music that really defies categorization. The mastermind behind the band is Rune Eriksen (aka Blasphemer in his days with Mayhem). Not only a highly inventive and versatile guitarist and an interesting and adventurous composer (not really so much a songwriter). But also a highly accomplished producer giving "Blood Of Bacchus" a clean, clear and very 'big' sound where every instrument stands well defined in the mix. Not least to the benefit of Jaime Ferreira's bass, deep and melodic and far from the average metal basssound. But the really star of the show is the formidable vocal talents of Carmen Simoes. Quite simply a stunning singer, very technical and able to reach some incredible high soprano notes with absolute accuracy. But a real artist, using her voice like an instrument and also sensual whispers and tribal-like chanting. Simoes who has worked with Monspell has also written the rather gloomy lyrics. There is some classical influences, not least in the use of cello. And a fine guestspot from the illustrious Garm (from Ulver). Quite simply spellbinding and highly recommended to everyone into edge-seeking and visionary music.
