Editorial Reviews

Based on the modern novel by noted author John Hawkes, Bohemian couple Cyril and Fiona (Charles Dance and Sheryl Lee) travel to a remote location to escape the convention of middle class morality. Committed to the notion of "open marriage", they find themselves attracted to Catherine and Hugh, recent arrivals who move into the villa next door. But, as the four interlocking characters pursue the sexual idyll, what proves to be liberating for some, is inevitable destructive to others.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Pains of Passion, April 14, 2000
By
This review is from: Blood Oranges [VHS] (VHS Tape)
An unusual film about sensuality, morality, and the consequences of free love. Two married couples swap partners for sexual pleasure. I liked this film but it will not be everyone's cup of tea. It is beautifully photographed and has wonderful music. Everything about the film conveys sensuality without being vulgar. The characters pay a price, though, for indulging their passions.

4.0 out of 5 stars nnice film about love and sex, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Blood Oranges (DVD)
I bought this movie without seeing it because it's from the creators of Angels and Insects which I enjoyed, and my gamble turned out to pay off pretty well. Not a fancy movie or a masterpiece of any kind, but a beautifully filmed and subtle film about the relationships between two couples. The scenery is really gorgeous, and I found the dialogue to be sparce but poignant and the sex to be tasteful and almost innocent. IT's almost a coming of age story about two middle aged couples who grow up the hard way. Nothing to die for, but an enjoyable and sensual film.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Twin Peaks & Sheryl Lee fans, December 21, 2008
By
This review is from: The Blood Oranges (DVD)
I bought it on VHS recently for a buck and it's mainly worth watching for Sheryl Lee (Fiona) who played Laura Palmer on David Lynch's Twin Peaks. She plays a very sensual, similar character to Palmer in this 1997 film. I enjoyed the soundtrack by Angelo Badalamenti whose score resembles his compositions on Twin Peaks. The best musical score is during the main credits at the beginning, it's haunting and beautiful. Other than that the plot is not that great, I found myself forwarding a couple of times. Again, Sheryl is alluring in the movie, you won't be disappointed.
