Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though his prose is sometimes unpolished, the pseudonymous Girard, who wrote this first novel while serving time in a federal prison for violation of the RICO act, shines as a storyteller, especially when calling on his insider's knowledge of the Mafia. Michael "Mickey Boy" Messina has just been paroled from prison after having been set up by Little Vinnie Calabra, son of Don Vincenze Calabra, most powerful boss of the Five Families. Messina begins a steamy, explicitly described love affair with his younger brother's ex-girlfriend, Laurel Bianco, as Don Vincenze sets off a war among the Families in order to purge the Mafia of the unfit and reduce the number of Families to two. The gradually revealed relationship between Messina's mother and Don Vincenze, while no surprise, makes a nicely integrated subplot. Girard's authoritative grasp of the Mafia's inner workings, his narrative skills and ability to create credible characters easily compensate for his occasional lapses into clumsy prose.

From Library Journal

Jailed for something he did not do, Mickey Boy Messina, an associate of the Calabra crime family in New York City, is paroled after six years and must put his life back together. He is caught between a parole officer who wants to catch him consorting with known members of organized crime so that he can return Messina to prison, and Laurel, with whom he falls deeply in love only to find that she hates his way of life. At the same time he is invited to join the Calabra family as a man of rank and is close to discovering who his father is. Written while the author was in prison for racketeering, this first novel vividly portrays the American Mafia, showing how Messina could live in that ambivalent world of violence and honor. Girard captivates the reader with his insider's knowledge but neither romanticizes nor denigrates the Mafia's vast power and wealth. He is an accomplished storyteller. This has been optioned for a film.

No question, this is a well-written book (minus some really annoying typos in Kindle, e.g. don's -the possessive of don - keeps showing up as don't - obviously the spell-checker didn't know this was a Mob-based tale). But, given the comparatively little action and good but static portrayal of characters (they don't develop-what you see is what you get from start to finish) the book could have been cut by at least one-third.
Sex is nice and contemplation of mob hits are nice but again and again? The hits are original and they do pick of the pace. Several minor characters are left hanging (Ricky, Georgie).
The protagonist is Mickey Boy, who grew up in a poor section of Brooklyn (NY) and always had fantasies of joining the Mob. He gets his wish, starting with a six year prison term for a crime he had nothing to do with. But Mickey Boy knows Mob rules, and refuses to suggest that he might have been framed. He wants to be officially accepted into a family and can think of nothing else despite the begging of his mother and girlfriend to leave well enough alone and get a real job. Mickey gets his wish but at what cost?

When I read the product information for "Blood of Our Father" and saw James Caan, of Godfather fame, recommended this book, I just had to read it. And I was not disappointed.

Sonny Girard is obviously someone in the know when it comes to the Italian mob. I grew up in Manhattan's Little Italy, so I know a little bit about the type of people portrayed in this book. Girard hits the bullseye with his mobster characterizations. In addition, Girard spins an intriguing Mobdom web with his realistic storytelling in the saga of Mickey Boy Messina's tension-filled struggles while navigating the land mines inherent in the vicious jungle of the Italian mob.

Like James Caan, I highly recommend this book.
