Police lieutenant Rafael De Anza's wife has been charged with murdering a lady poet. Both women belonged to the same poetry group and had been seen fighting in a restaurant - a fight that ended with Laura De Anza threatening to kill Geraldine Hare. But Laura claims she was caught in the rain at the time of the crime, waiting in a doorway twenty blocks away. Disgusted that his own police force believes his wife is the killer, De Anza has hired Carver Bascombe to find someone who saw Laura, for a foolproof alibi that would force the police to track the real killer.
