Blood Rayne is an interesting concept that the manufacturers should have taken further. The main character is the typical scantily-clad, unnecessarily jiggling bombshell...with fangs. The controls are easy to master once you get into the game and the concept is pretty simple. The goal for the game is clearly defined although not always easy to obtain. When I first...

5.0 out of 5 stars Let it Reign, October 25, 2002
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
I have been eagerly anticipating this game amongst the slew of vampire games that have fallen short. BloodRayne takes on a "The Matrix" feel in combat with a full range of controls and perspectives. It's not an all-original concept, but it exceeds the current line-up well.

Controls:
Surprisingly smooth and easy to master attacks. The feeding element is one of the best eye-candy visuals as well as a necessity. The game takes a limited use of the XBOX's controller or full use, whichever you prefer to set it to in the options menu.

Gameplay:
An exhilerating rush from the very beginning, whether you start in training or dive right into the game. This isn't the typical "this is the right way, that is not" world as you'll find many places to explore, feed, and test those quick reflexes of yours. It's creepy, gothic, and intense. I remember being 45 minutes into the game and still at the beginning. It's a long game and rightfully so. The story can be found on the product description, so I don't feel the need to relay it again.

Visual:
Let's be honest. I love my XBOX, PS2, and when I had the GameCube, I loved that too (if only for 2 games.) No matter what the reviews state, the graphics are basically the same on all the systems it's designed for. Unless you have "Only on XBOX" and so forth, these were designed for multiple platforms and the only "tweaks" were its ports. That's a sad thing because it doesn't use the full harness of the XBOX's power. Many of you will disagree, but if you have multiple systems, rent them at your local video store and find out. I haven't found much difference in any multi-platform designed game so far.

Visuals II:
With that out of the way, it is visually stunning. BloodRayne is gorgeous and her movements, cutscenes, and animation are enough to distract you from the task at hand. The opening intro scene is confusing on purpose, however, it propells the story about to unfold. That said, the intro draws you into the game and glued to your seat for the hours of gameplay ahead. The backgrounds are a pre-rendered sort in some areas and the water you encounter isn't impressive (multi-platform game.) There are a lot of stunning other eye-poppers like breaking through walls, busting up chairs and tables, or shredding bedsheets and pillows (yes, you can do all that.) Blood Rage and the slo-motion battles are an interesting visual twist sure to delight the legion of vampire game fans.

Sound:
Here is where the XBOX struts its superiority. Not because of the game, but the hardware.

Pros:
Because of the XBOX's hardware and massive hard drive, loading times, frame rates, sound, and saving is easier. To reiterarte, the graphics aren't any better than the other platforms, but who cares, right?

BloodRayne's voice-over's are more convincing than most games have been to recent date. As for the character herself, there aren't too many words to describe her when you're left speechless.

Interesting storyline, control, and gameplay.

Cons:
A ported, multi-platform game lacking the advantage of using the full power of the XBOX. Examples: "Final Fantasy X" for PS2 pushed the limits of the machine, as did "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty." Another example: "Halo," which used the full strength of the XBOX and "Dead or Alive 3" (One of the most visually and all-around impressive titles I have ever seen on a console.)

All in all...this is a hot title which may remind some, because of the Louisiana part, of Shadow Man: Second Coming. Albeit, a better game through and through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloodrayne, January 2, 2003

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
This game hooked me from the beginning, with Bloodrayne's wonderfully gory attacks and blinding speed.

My friends felt the animation was choppy but changed their mind when they actually played the game themselves. The animation might appear choppy to someone observing (not playing) the game but once you grab the controller you realize it is because Bloodrayne is so incredibly fast.

The controls were easy for me, a long time Halo player, to master, especially because the left joystick controls movement and the right joystick controls where you are looking, a control scheme I feel more games (such Crimson Sea and Buffy, which use a crazy left joystick+left trigger to strafe control scheme) should use.

Her ability to slow down time is crucial since she is so fast. I played one of the most hectic levels in that mode the entire time to dodge every bullet and to optimize her attacks.

The game also has many bosses that have a single weakness you have to discover while fighting them.

And of course, killing Nazis is a favorite past time of nearly every FPS gamer!

In summary, Bloodrayne is very playable and rewards you with lots of blood and guts flying everywhere, with Bloodrayne herself making funny comments to people as she's slicing them up.

I highly recommend this game. XBOX magazine gave it a low score, so I don't really listen to Francesca Reyes' opinions anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get enough, October 18, 2002

This game is already out. I bought it last week. The game is awesome. The graphics on the XBOX are outstanding. The controls are great and easy to learn. Bloodrayne has a variety of cool moves. She can either take enemies out with her blades, which chops the bodies to pieces, or she can use a bunch of different guns that she picks up. You can target more than one enemy at a time. You also have bloodrage that slows every thing down, she performs some truly great kills this way. You can also feed on enemies by leaping on them or pulling them over to you with a harpoon, much like Mortal Combats Scorpion. You must try this game and I can't wait for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, December 15, 2003
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
this game is plain out awesome. You are this cool vampire/human chick. In the first levels its not very fun but after you get to where you are fighting ... this game is so cool. you have a great assortment of wepons, and if you run out of ammo you can always use the 2 blades that are attached to your wrists. This game is one big bloody mess! and its so cool. you can rip apart your enimies like wet paper. with your blades you can slice off arms, heads, legs, hands, half of faces, almost anything, i totally recromend this game

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, plenty of Action and an Adult Theme., March 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
This game is a fun change from oridnary Xbox fare, and may remind you of Hunter: The Reckoning. It is simple, has plenty of action and a very adult theme which is by far the real selling point of the game.

The GOOD:
- Simple, jump-in-and-play design.
- The controller setup works fine, and the character is responsive.
- Good assortment of weapons, though very little ammunition will make you rely on your blades.
- Good use of multiple "view" modes, including a "dialated perception" much like Max Paynes "Bullet Time".
- Adult themed, and doesn't skimp on the gore.
- Who doesn't love killing Nazi's?
- As a half-vampire, Rayne can regain life by feeding on targets.

The BAD:
- The Graphics/Sounds are not all together bad, but not the game's strong point either. The graphics really suffer on character close-ups of anyone but Rayne.
- The game is far too short.
- Not enough Ammo in the guns.
- Some sequences are just too easy.

The UGLY:
- Weak storyline (not that it matters in a game this simple)

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
The graphics are nice. Not spectacular though, as some say it is. But they are adequate, at least indoor environments are. Outdoors aren't that good due to the dullness of everything.

The control system.... must heavily recommend using the "1st person" controls. You get different moves as you progress in the game, but you aren't much in control of them... they execute as the computer sees fit in the moment.

The game is fast paced and there's a lot of freedom of movement... although you don't progress unless you complete certain checkpoints, and exploring isn't very rewarding.

You get weapons, but IMHO they are not very useful. Sure they do quite a bit of damage, but what's a machine gun good for if you only get 15 rounds along with it? A grenade launcher with only 2 grenades? A 3 bullet loaded pistol?

The music isn't very varied, but it works well jumping up the pace of the game. Sound effects are ok..

All in all, it's an entertaining game indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, but sadly overlooked game!, January 2, 2003

Like blood and carnage? Like easy to control games that still present you with a challenge? Like slaughtering nazis? Like hot vampire chicks? Then, brother this is the game for you. The basic story is that you play as a half human/half vampire (I know, I know, it reminds you of Blade but give this a chance before you scoff) who is recruited by a secret society to basically protect mankind. I dont wanna give away too much of the plot but suffice to say there's plenty of zombies and nazis and other various evils to keep you busy. Controls are easy, and in fact you have 4 different control schemes to choose from, so there's something for everyone. Is this a game for kids? No it isn't. This is a game for adults. If you dig Resident Evil and those sort of games this is well worth the price. One of the better games to come out in 2002 that you've probably never heard of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood Rayne KILLS the ratings!, July 2, 2004
This review is from: Blood Rayne (Video Game)
Blood Rayne is so cool. I bought it at Toys R Us today and I loved it. I'm a "Buffy the vampire slayer" fanatic so... duh? Ofcourse I would like this game but not love it. My brother prefered it for me so I was nice and I purchased it. It was great!

- For one, I am a guy and the women are dressed just enough to get me convinced.

-Second, the controls are weird but the button handling really has a story to it. I would rate the buttons a 9 out of 10.

-Third, wow! These graphics are amazing and the beggining is fabulous. I turned my Xbox on and off twice just to see the begining again.

-Last, Oh my god! The blood sucking is great! Cool weapons and everything!

I would prefer this game for violent teens.

This game is my guilty pleasure of the year. I found a used copy of this for about $10. Why this isn't more popular is beyond me I thought it was more fun than most games out there. Kill bad guys and suck their blood, what more do you want? Sure it isn't the the most creative, original, or mind blowing game out there, but who cares?

Blood Rayne is an interesting concept that the manufacturers should have taken further. The main character is the typical scantily-clad, unnecessarily jiggling bombshell...with fangs. The controls are easy to master once you get into the game and the concept is pretty simple. The goal for the game is clearly defined although not always easy to obtain. When I first started the game, I thought it was lame and boring, but after completing the early levels the game improved. Later levels employ much better graphics and story. Stick with it, you will like it in the end.
