Product Description

Cee Cee James continues to bring her trademark lyrical and vocal talents expressed in crossover stylings of deep contemporary roots/blues in 12 original songs that fans will eat alive. Blood Red Blues, produced by Legendary Grammy Winning Jim Gaines, is Cee Cee's third and most exciting CD to date. Cee Cee jumps up several notches as Jim brings out the best, pushing Cee Cee to hold nothing back as she rises and meets the challenge with ease. Blood Red Blues continues the strong momentum generated from her last two releases, Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl and Seriously Raw. Both CD's generated stellar reviews in the U.S. and Europe, and held top chart positions at Cashbox, the Roots Report and at XM/Sirius BB King Bluesville.

Review

Cee Cee James gets about 40 seconds into the opening title cut when her stylistic likeness to Janis Joplin becomes downright chilling. James' voice is fuller and less-ravaged, and if the resemblance is uncanny it's almost entirely free of affectation, sounding less like an imitation than a fortunate coincidence.

James also has an able right-hand man in Rob 'Slideboy' Andrews, who fuels the jumper Let's All Get Loose like a coal burner fuels a freight train. Loose gives way to Feel My Love Come Down, one of several numbers where Andrews sounds a lot like Foghat on a great night.

Andrews does a lot of the heavy lifting, which allows guitarist Rocky Athas to finesse his way through Loose, put overdriven blues licks to Comfort Of A Good Heart, or join with Andrews to duel on I'm Taking Mine.

Between James' voice and Andrews' style, the similarities to Joplin and Foghat are obvious. Combine this album's no-frills production and straightforward arrangements, and you might think you've come upon newly discovered tapes of Pearl herself fronting 'Lonesome' Dave Peverett's band or an elaborate hoax like the Masked Marauders, the fictitious super group that had everyone guessing back in 1969.

James goes a bit overboard with her Joplin thing sometimes, as in her original I Got A Right To Sing The Blues. But there's a lot of life and likeability to James, her original material, and this electric boogie music than mere impersonators could provide. --Vintage Guitar, November 2012

If you like your blues raw and close to the bone, you will absolutely love Blood Red Blues by Cee Cee James! Produced, engineered & mixed by Grammy award winner Jim Gaines at Bessie Blues Studios in Stantonville, Tennessee, all twelve original songs are co-written with husband Rob "Slideboy" Andrews who also excels on Rhythm & Slide Guitar to stunning effect! Backing musicians are Chris Leighton (Drums & Percussion), Dan Mohler (Bass), Rocky Athas (Lead Guitar) & Susan Julian (Keyboards) with Stanley Crouse, Vicki Atkins, Danunielle "Pie" Hill & Kimberlie Helton on background vocals.

Blood Red Blues is where Cee Cee James brings her "Seriously Raw" high octane energy into the studio, unleashing bleeding heartfelt lyrics borne out of a lifetime paying her dues, through whiskey soaked vocals that bear all the hallmarks of the legendary Janis Joplin! So much to applaud on this exceptional album starting with the title track 'Blood Red Blues' that will undoubtedly get more than its fair share of airplay, along with the catchy 'Comfort Of A Good Heart' reminiscent of 'Black Velvet' by Alannah Myles. One can't help but feel those delta blues on 'Feel My Love Come Down' and 'I Got A Right To Sing The Blues' whilst 'Walk On' delivers a stark reminder of the shortcomings of society. The sassy '100 Ways To Make Love' adds yet another facet to this album as does the haunting melody on 'Wounds' that reminds us of just how fragile we are.

Also plenty to boogie down to here on 'Let's All Get Loose', 'Thick Like Blood', 'Worn Out Sins', 'Cover Me With Love' and finally the classic red hot rocker ''I'm Takin' Mine" that is a blowback to the sound of Roger Chapman and his Streetwalkers in full flow, and it doesn't get much better than that!

Cee Cee James is the real deal who proudly wears her heart on her sleeve and when the lady sings "Blood Red Blues is in your veins, can you feel it?"... you can bet a lot of people surely will!!!

This is Ms. James most skillfully produced release to date, the work of production master Jim Gaines has obviously had its intended effect on the sound that is recorded and they overall feel of the release. Does it stand up to Ms. James' strong vocals and passionate urgings, let's see.

Opening with the title cut, "Blood Red Blues" starts out in the swamp and goes deeper into the miasma that she conjures up with her singing and sounds from the band. Slide work sets the stage and almost chanting background vocals perfectly capture her spirit and the other spirits that are floating about in the studio itself.

Picking up the pace "Let's All Get Loose" is a jumping invite to "strip it down close to the bone, let's take it all off now...smash the TV and video game..." there is ample truth contained within her pleas, simple truths that will be with us forever, but we have to not ignore them, realize where we are and hat we are tied to. It is a call that is equivocal to seeking re-birth, and she states it as she sings about a river that we can all jump into and reemerge fresh new and unbridled.

Ms. James has had her share of success, and hard times. In "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues" she makes her case for her doing what she is doing. In a straight forward, bullet pointed essay on her street cred she ticks off check marks and just when you think she has overstated her case Rob `Slideboy' Andrews whips the hammer of certainty from his guitar and solidifies the argument as she counts off the percentages to be applied in her case.

While the production values are outstanding they do not obliterate the deep rooted rawness that Ms. James possesses. Yes it is somewhat slicker and more polished but it is essentially Ms. James.

I do get a bit tired of it if I just listen to the music, but that's the case with just about anyone, so I mix her in with others and it's great.

CC is associated with Janis Joplin in style and music type......if you believe in reincarnation, then you get it....SHE has returned.

However, CC holds her own without the connotations to and of Janice. She is her own woman/singer, dynamite soul, and timing. Fantastic lower register and spot on spotless with her band. With some very good harmony. While your at it, join her mailing list and keep up with the band and Cee Cee, great fun.

This original set of blues tunes from Cee Cee and her partner Rob Andrews lays it down right. This is fresh blues the way it should be written and performed. A stellar effort from one of the most promising blues artists on the scene.

I thought I heard Janis in here somewhere. Cee Cee has a voice, she can sing with some grit, when see chouses to.
