Book Description

September 14, 2007
Cursed to roam an untamed west as a vampire, Ezekiel Carson, once a devoted man of God, is haunted by his past. Feeding on bandits and spending his nights satisfying his endless lusts, he has found his life empty. William Hamilton is a school teacher from New York who is in need of a guide and seeks out The Blood Rider. Their meeting is less than promising, but Ezekiel agrees to help after learning William is searching for his brother, a preacher who has disappeared from a mining town in New Mexico.

Riding only at night and drinking from blood-filled canteens, the journey begins. When William discovers the man in black's secret, he is weary, but, desperate to find his brother, they travel on. After arriving, the two discover the prosperous mining town holds a dark secret. The burned down church on the outskirts of town, missing miners and whispers of demons are just the beginning. The moon is high, the sky is clear and the scent of death lingers in the air.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In his rather humble introduction to THE BLOOD RIDER, Mark Tarrant seems to apologize for not being an English major. No need! I, for one, don t want to read a vampire Western dressed up in flowery prose, laden with weighty metaphors and given -- well, y'know -- meaning. I just want it to ride; luckily, this one is meant to be nothing more than an escape from reality. THE BLOOD RIDER literally begins in motion and rarely lets up. Ezekiel Carson is traveling with his preacher father and the rest of their family in covered wagons toward a town called Bear Creek, where they hope to preach the word of the Lord. Those hopes are dashed when gunmen slaughter the entire party... except Ezekiel, who barely pulls through. He wishes he were dead, however, when a vampire then comes along and bites him, turning him into one highly adverse to sunlight. Twenty years later, a mild-mannered school teacher named William Hamilton arrives in town, searching for his preacher brother, who has disappeared. His kind isn t exactly welcome in a town of sinning outlaws, but Ezekiel eventually however reluctantly agrees to help him locate his missing sibling. That journey takes them to a New Mexico mine where Asians are slave labor and demons lie inside. Along the way, William is terrified Ezekiel will bite him, until the vampire assures him he only kills people who deserve it. And that he does, to great effect. If THE BLOOD RIDER reads like a pilot to a weekly television show, so be it. After all, it is the start for a planned BLOOD AND SPURS series, FORT DOOM soon will follow, and by the time this adventure comes to an end, our two main characters are finally settled into a partnership that promises more to come. Fans of oddball Westerns -- and this is far more Western than horror -- will want to see that. Tarrant's sentences adhere closely to the noun/verb/direct object formula, but this helps speed the read with only a little complication: A tendency not to attribute quotes sometimes trips you up as to who is saying what. Still, it's easily deciphered in this delightfully pulpy genre mishmash, with a cool cover illustrated by Michael Graham. --Rod Lott, Bookgasm.com

About the Author

Mark Tarrant is a creative powerhouse who knew he wanted to write from his first encounter with Star Wars. Born in Lansing, Michigan, Tarrant grew up loving books about monsters and the unknown. A big fan of comics especially those of Robert E. Howard's Conan character, his reading eventually included the master of horror, Stephen King. His storytelling is also influenced by his passion for Western movies, particularly The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. His artistic talents have received recognition in The Boston Globe, USA Today, The Valley Advocate, The Republican, The Herald and The Buzz.

With the debut of his Blood & Spurs series, Tarrant introduces us to an intriguing character - the Blood Rider, a vampire in the Wild West. Once a man of God, the Blood Rider now roams the West dispensing his own brand of justice. Lovers of a good story with a fantasy twist will find a compelling new hero from the very first volume, The Blood Rider.

Tarrant's personal life is a sharp contrast to the fantasy world that captivates his readers. He lives in Western Massachusetts, loves history and pop culture, and gets especially excited during NFL season. Tarrant has recently discovered another creative passion: parenting his daughter Haley. Being a new father has given him another platform for storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced action packed classic!, February 12, 2011
This review is from: The Blood Rider (Paperback)
I discovered a link to the "Blood Rider" website by accident when I was googling vampires. It was a stroke of good fortune as I scanned author Mark Tarrant's excerpts and synopsis. I ordered the book and I'm pleased to report that it was worth it. "Blood Rider" is fast-paced exciting adventure. Gothic westerns are not easy to find, and they are not always very interesting but Tarrant has exceeded my expectations. The premise is unique: Ezekiel Carson, a vampire, joins up with William Hamilton who is searching for his lost brother. Ezekiel is bored and agrees to help Hamilton to break the monotony of his existence. "Everything gets old, except me." Ezekiel says. (p. 69). Armed with a Colt six-shooter and a horse named Thunder (Hamilton rides a horse named Lightning), Ezekiel Carson is the most original pulp creation in decades. He keeps himself alive by drinking the blood of evil men and he keeps several canteens of blood available to quench his thirst along the dusty trail. The action is fast paced - often furious - and this is one book that fans of the western-horror-adventure genre won't be able to put down. Tarrant demonstrates a command of the language and knows precisely how to move a story along. His descriptions are as sharp as Ezekiel's fangs, as explosive as a Colt belching flame and lead, and far more entertaining than the usual western. Best of all, "Blood Rider" is the first in a series called "Blood and Spurs." I'm saddling up with Mark Tarrant from here on out. Or, as Tarrant himself wrote in my copy's inscription, "Hit the bloody trail, Amigo!" Sounds like a plan. The weird western genre doesn't get any better than this!
