McNeill puts her ability to zoom in on a time past and make it vitally alive to good use in her latest effort, a tale about Mary Queen of Scots. The novel begins with her infamous beheading in 1587, then telescopes back to her birth and follows her forward through her childhood in France and her ascendance to the throne of Scotland. A parallel story, that of the peddler Nathan, becomes intertwined with Mary's, beginning with his being present at her coronation as a baby. Over the years their paths continually cross as Nathan is spellbound by the queen and her struggles. He always has a soft spot for her, even as her actions sometimes do not warrant his support. But it is a twist of fate that allows Nathan to be beholden to her as she unknowingly provides him with the greatest of all gifts he could be given.
