Book Description

February 1, 1999
Dr. Evelyn Sutcliffe works and thrives in an urban warzone -- battling death everyday in the Emergency Room of Manhattan's University Hospital. But even her superior skill cannot save Shelley Reinish -- a fellow doctor, a close friend and apparent suicide -- dead from a drug overdose. This time the Reaper has won, leaving Evelyn distraught and devastated, and questioning her abilities as a healer.

But why would Shelley -- a healthy, talented young surgeon with a good marriage -- take her own life? It is a question that haunts Dr. Sutcliffe; one that is leading her into the hidden corners of the medical world toward terrifying secrets that reside in the darkest recesses of the human heart.

And the next life she must fight to save will be her own. . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A suspense-packed, hard-edged tale of the real world in one of New York's big hospitals, this first novel by a medical technician has good credentials as an authentic medical thriller. Evelyn Sutcliffe, M.D., resident in emergency medicine, is on duty when her colleague, Dr. Shelley Reinish, is brought in to the emergency room by her frantic husband; she is comatose from an overdose of medication, apparently a suicide attempt. Attempts to save her life fail and Evelyn grieves for this friend who had a brillant future in surgery. Drawn into the case is Evelyn's lover and Dr. Reinish's psychiatrist, Phil Carchiollo. Did he have clues that Shelley was contemplating suicide? Or was her death murder? Stories of bizarre behavior in the operating room lead a shaken Evelyn to other discoveries about the dead surgeon. Tales of her eccentric conduct with staff doctors and talk of an expose she was writing that contained provocative interviews with her peers are mysterious developments. When Evelyn's own investigation turns up some horrifying surprises it becomes clear that Shelley's life was not as placid as everyone believed. Riveting prose tends to redeem occasional wordy passages of medicalese (anesthesia to the uninitiated) and the setting is authentic and the characters believable. Though now and again melodramatic, the story unfolds at a forceful clip.

YA-- Readers who enjoy medical thrillers will enjoy this suspenseful first novel set in a hospital in which a prominent doctor commits suicide. A complex set of relationships among the medical staff adds to the intrigue. Robinson uses the feelings and actions of the main character, Evelyn Sutcliffe, to set the tone. Dr. Sutcliffe unravels the clues surrounding the death of her friend, and in the final pages confronts the killer. Readers who enjoy Robin Cook's books should give this new novelist a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychological thriller that is a great prequel to First Cut, November 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Blood Run (Mass Market Paperback)

Evelyn Sutcliffe is a second year emergency resident at University Hospital where she shares a deep relationship with a psychiatrist. Evelyn should be a happy person, but the idyllic picture conceals a confused, anxiety-laden woman.. Her lover freely boasts that he is seeing another woman. While Evelyn is on duty, a close friend, Dr. Shelley Reinish, is rushed to ER, but dies within an hour.

Her colleagues, friends, and the police believe that an overdose caused the death. However, Evelyn cannot accept that her vivacious friend would commit suicide. There are too many unanswered questions so the doctor decides to do a bit of sleuthing. However, the facts she learns about Shelley makes Evelyn wonder if she ever truly knew the deceased. As she peels away the layers to Shelley's inner core, Evelyn places herself in danger of joining her friend in the afterlife.

Fans who enjoy action thrillers or works of psychological suspense need to read BLOOD RUN. In reality, this novel is more a coming of age tale of a woman struggling with many flaws and fears. This mainstream flavored novel is a prequel to Leah Ruth Anderson's best seller FIRST CUT, making it a must read for fans of Dr. Sutcliffe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unusual Medical Thriller, January 28, 1999

Not a run of the mill medical thriller. The main character's frequent introspection's makes for an interesting flow in the story line. Good character definition and well plotted mystery make this a fast and entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Characters, December 15, 1999

I really hope that we see a lot more books with Evelyn Sutcliffe as the main character...I liked this book because I found myself really liking the "villian" before we knew he was the villian!...OOPS! ...This didnt get 5 stars because the plot wasn't a five star plot, it was pretty basic, not alot of twists and turns but did keep the pages turning towards the end. I don't like Phil and I don't know why...Evelyn needs a new man.!
