A surprise, February 18, 2012
Vikings heading out of Norway to plunder Iceland. Big deal (yawn). I found this in a used bookstore, so it was worth a gamble (cheap).
Well what a surprise! This, the first book of The Vikings series, is actually well-written and plotted.
Yes, there is the usual Viking mayhem and such, but Langholm has written in a long-term internal feud between two of the major characters. And the problems only get worse when they're blown off course by a strong eastern wind. After that, the hardships, squabbling, and surprises spring out.
I don't have the 2nd book in the saga, just the 3rd. Not sure I want to read #3 before I find #2, it might spoil things.
I won't spoil things by saying anything more except, "if you're a fan of this sort of thing, you'll thoroughly enjoy the first book.
More when I've read the next.
