5.0 out of 5 stars It's About Fashion!!!
It's fairly obvious the two previous reviewers didn't quite get that this book is about the FASHION photographer Bruce Weber, not the MALE NUDE photographer Bruce Weber. 2.0 out of 5 stars Truth be told: pretty lame
The paper quality is poor, and the colors are washed out and not at all crisp. If you already own "Men without Ties," you can definitely skip this book.

It's fairly obvious the two previous reviewers didn't quite get that this book is about the FASHION photographer Bruce Weber, not the MALE NUDE photographer Bruce Weber. Like Mapplethorpe, Weber's works extend far beyond the male nude. Unfortunately, that is all he's currently known for, however. Well, this book will change that, for sure! Weber is truly one of the greatest fashion photogs on the scene today. His work can easily be placed with the greats like Scavullo, Newton, and Meisel. This book is a gloriously beautiful retrospective of Weber's fashion work, as well as a look at Weber's own personal journey into the world of fashion and beauty. Anyone who loves fashion photography will love this book. I'm giving it to all my friends for holiday gifts! A must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Weber fashion primer, December 11, 2005
By
mkb (new york, new york USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blood Sweat and Tears (Hardcover)
"Blood, Sweat and Tears" is an essential monograph. Impressive in it's sheer heft but magnificent for Bruce Weber's beautiful fashion imagery and cultural significance for a quarter century.

Bruce Weber's fashion photography career is perhaps one of the most significant and prolific in the history of the genre. His unique vision, style, casting, vitality, whimsy and humor have provided a refreshing interpretation of fashion and commercial photography for a quarter century. "Blood, Sweat and Tears" offers a wonderful sampling of many of his memorable stories and iconographic images. One could argue that almost everything Weber has shot including male nudes, dogs, still life, portraits... are all fashion imagery. Weber himself has been an enormously influential architect of our perception of photography in the market place and brought what might have seemed distant and iconographic imagery (or art) into the mainstream. The Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren campaigns of the 80's and 90's were seminal and provided defining imagery for the era. The Abercrombie & Fitch campaigns are perhaps the natural evolution both photographically and culturally - do you see any similarities between the catalogs and shots/antics/sexuality of Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan?

I know I'm not alone in being bemused by critics that whine about this book being too focused on Weber's fashion career (and not enough male nudes) when the book is specifically titled as such! To some of Weber's fans, iconic male (and female) nudes are his most important work - and he has served them well with numerous beautiful books and exhibitions. But will he be best remembered as a force in art photography with a classical sensibility to the human form - at the end of the C20th!? Or will his legacy will be as one of the greatest commercial fashion photographer in history?

3.0 out of 5 stars High expectations..., November 20, 2005

I completely agree with previous review - very little substance for an expensive book. Poor quality paper, not the best of Weber by far. A big disappointment for a Weber fans.

This book is the no.1 gift for this Christmas! It comes in a blue box to protect it from damaging during shipping and is really a suprise to open! Many pictures from Vogue etc. are in this book as well as the beautiful pictures from various Versace advertising campaigns. Really worth every dollar! I heard that they only print the first edition so get it while it's available.

This is one of the most beautiful books of photography I have seen. I do love Bruce Weber's work and this book showcase a variety of his work in the fashion industry. It is eclectic and cohesive. The printing is beautiful and the binding allows the pages to open flat to so that you can see as much of the images as possible.

An amazing Bruce Weber portfolio and everything a good coffee table book should be. It's size is amazing pound for pound and filled to the brim with Bruce's ad campaigns for Versace, Abercrombie & Fitch, endless fashionista mags as well as a plethora of portraits. Quite a treat for the eyes for no one takes a picture like Bruce Weber. Never have I seen a photographer who can capture the ultimate essence of beautiful youth like this man. Indulge yourself with this one...
