I read "Blood Ties" when I was 13. My reading of suspense and mystery novels had been limited to a very small range of books written for my age group. Therefore, as I read the book and encountered gory and frightening scences I was appalled. It took me about a week to finish it, which was kind of a slow pace for me but, several times I had put it down, resolving not to read it anymore because I was scared half out of my wits. I'd always been able to guess the ending of stories, and I could usually figure out who the "bad guy" was before it was revealed. This book kept me guessing and reading until almost the last page. It was well written, and although I was still young when I read it, I think they could have left out some of the more gory parts. I mean come on, this is a christian novel!!!! I would'nt recommend it to everyone, but if you like horror and suspense, you've gotta read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat suspense thriller!, May 20, 2004
This review is from: Blood Ties (Hardcover)
In this edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller, Sigmund Brouwer shows the success of his earlier thriller novel "Double Helix" was not a fluke. On this occasion, however, he leaves the field of medicine and science, and creates a heart-stopping plot revolving around a serial killer introduced as "The Watcher". The novel is divided in two parts, the first of which is set in 1973. Kelsie McNeill is the daughter of a local rancher, and is being stalked by a secret admirer, a serial killer who leaves her threatening notes of warning along with eagle feathers. The second half of the novel is set in 1996, as Kelsie is married to Clay Garner, the FBI agent who was part of the intial investigation. "The Watcher" sets his final plans in motion by kidnapping Kelsie and her son. Clay's own life is in danger as he seeks to rescue his wife and son, as well as uncover the identity of the mysterious serial killer.

The plot is thoroughly suspenseful, with lots of twists and turns, and when the identity of the mysterious "Watcher" is revealed in the last pages, the reader is sure to be in for a surprise! There are more Christian themes than in Brouwer's previous novel (the influence of C.S. Lewis is particularly apparent), but they are never a distraction from the main plot, and they are neither superficial nor overbearing as is the case in a lot of Christian fiction today. Some may regret that the religious themes aren't more deeply explored, but this could result in excessiveness or in theological candy floss. Brouwer wisely avoids both extremes by focussing on a suspenseful plot. I would rate "Blood Ties" as being at least as good as the thrillers produced by Terri Blackstock and Dee Henderson, and a welcome alternative to secular suspense fiction authors like Mary Higgins Clark. -GODLY GADFLY

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping suspense! You WON'T want to put it down!!, July 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Blood Ties (Hardcover)
Sigmund Brouwer is a FANTASTIC author. When I first checked out this book, I wasn't expecting anything other than a basic suspense/mystery book. BOY, WAS I WRONG! This book is a suspense/mystery book, but it goes deeper then all others of it's kind out there.

This book's suspense (and wondering of who the Watcher was) kept me up past midnight reading! I read this book in 3 days! The best I've done with any book I've ever read! This is without a doubt, the best work of fiction I have ever read yet! Read it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Rediculously predictable, and way too violent, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Blood Ties (Hardcover)
First the book was too predicable and rediculous. How many women do you know would not tell their FBI husband that they were being stalked?

Incredibly descriptive violence is typical for this author and why? Certainly not necessary, especially for the Christian market. But also, he doesn't need to include this violence as he's capable and certainly has written some really good books without it.

I got about 1/3 of the way through the book before I figured out the ending. I thought then that if it ended the way I thought it would, I would throw in the trash, that's how stupid I thought the ending was. Needless to say, it ended up in the trash.

Don't waste your money on this one. Try instead one of the Nick Barrett mysteries by this author. They are so much better and not nearly as violent.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best mystery novels of all time!, May 24, 2000
By
This review is from: Blood Ties (Hardcover)
I will guarantee, you will never guess who the killer is until the ending! It takes you totally by surprise! Brouwer is a genious, weaving great plot twists with well-built characters, and he tops it all off with nail-biting suspense! He covers up the killer exteremely well! I read this book in 2 days, it was that addicting! This novel doesn't get the recognition is deserves! Check it out! You'll be very glad you did!

Sigumund took a peice of paper and a pen a sculpted what is sure to go down in history as the most spell-binding book of all time. The plot is absolutely mind-boggling, keeping you guessing as to who the Watcher is down to the last page. This is the very best novel I've ever read

1.0 out of 5 stars Blood Ties, April 26, 2006
This review is from: Blood Ties (Hardcover)
There is NO value in a descriptive book like this for murders. If a reader is looking for a book that gives spiritual value and draws one closer to God the realist events, this IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

There are enough horrible things going on this world, enough that Christian authors do not have to describe in detail what happens and then present it in the guise of being a Christian book.

I would rate this book XXX

I like some of this author's other books, but I have removed this one from our church library.
