Book Description

April 1, 2009

Both passionate and humorous, this lively memoir journeys from Jim Sharman’s colorful childhood in his father's boxing troupe to his travels through Berlin, London, Sydney, and Tokyo, via the international successes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hair, and Jesus Christ Superstar. This dynamic chronicle reveals behind-the-scenes details from the performances, recounts conversations with Lou Reed, and describes a fateful meeting with author Patrick White. From the rough and ready world of outback Australia in the 1950s—where boxers and "pantomime dames" shared the stage—to the cultural explosion of the 1970s and beyond, this is more than just a remarkable story about Australia; it is a moving tribute to a legendary family in the entertainment world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jim Sharman is one of Australia's visionary greats: low-brow, high-brow, pop yet classical, fearless and fun."  —Baz Luhrmann

"Blood & Tinsel is a stunning self-portrait-lyrical, wry, smart and uncompromising-of one of the most daring Australian directors. Jim has perched ringside at the carnival of his own times–and it's a hot ticket! The Sharman/Shaman/Showman firmament twinkles with galaxies as diverse as Rocky Horror, Hair, discovering Kubrick, Lou Reed, Weimar cabaret. He made Australian creativity hip and original and international when it really mattered."  —Geoffrey Rush

"In Blood and Tinsel Sharman wonderfully evokes this world of the sideshow alley, the smell of linseed oil and farm animal shit at agricultural shows, the bluff, blokey universe of boxing with its blood, sweat and brutal urgency, all choreographed to the beating of a bass drum.  —Australian Literary Review
