Editorial Reviews

Benjamin Lebel is a luminary in his field: an internationally renowned wine expert who publishes a keenly-awaited new guide every year. When the local police chief enlists his help in the hunt for a serial killer who combines murders with Grand Crus, Benjamin s intuition and his nose are stimulated by the puzzling case. They both prove infallible as he works his own investigation in the sumptuous settings of the loveliest wine-growing regions in France. Bitten by the investigative bug and welcomed by the police as an expert, he seeks out new mysteries to solve in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards and in the regions of Cognac and Champagne. Adapted from the crime collection published by Fayard, Blood of the Vine is a series of full-bodied, yet light thrillers!
Ep. 1 - A Question of Brandy...or Death - Benjamin discovers some disturbing evidence of arson when an insurance company sends him to investigate the claim of the famous cellars of Baron Castayrac that have been ravaged by a suspicious fire.
Ep. 2 - Golden Wedding in Sauternes - An elderly couple approaches Benjamin at a book signing to appraise 40 bottles of rare Sauternes. Shortly afterwards they re found brutally murdered, and the precious bottles gone.
Ep. 3 - Food and Setbacks in the Loire Valley - A famous actor asks for Benjamin s help in selecting wine for a charity auction. At the same time, a journalist who s investigating the long-ago death of the actor s wife is tragically killed.
Ep. 4 - The Silky Widows - An eminent family is hit by successive deaths: the young heir in a riding accident and the father dying in his sleep. The widow wants to create a vintage tribute to her late son, and calls in Benjamin for consultation.

As witnessed by the slate of popular procedural programs on network television, we can't get enough of solving crime! I really enjoy having the opportunity to sample International programs, and the popular French detective series "Blood of the Vine" seems poised to be discovered by a larger worldwide audience. The third season (and I use the term liberally as there are only four episodes in each so-called season) just premiered in France to impressive ratings, and this coincides with Season One and Season Two making their North American DVD debut. The show is centered around an amateur sleuth and renowned wine expert named Benjamin Lebel, played by an excellent Pierre Arditi. In the opener, Lebel is consulted on a murder case where wine seems to be an central motif. This sparks his investigative juices and he launches a personal inquiry which proves he has quite a knack for deduction. Each episode, thereafter, is a self-contained mystery with the police actively seeking out Lebel's brand of expertise.

With the prevalence of TV mystery programs, it's hard to create something that feels entirely new. "Blood of the Vine," however, has a nice mix of cases to unravel. But the real key to the show's success is in its setting. First, the wine consultation aspect may seem like a bit of a stretch but is integrated better than you might imagine. With Lebel on the case, there does seem to be a pronounced rise in the crime within the wine regions of France! Isn't that always the case? But if you give yourself over to the concept and love the mystery genre, there is plenty to recommend this series. It is smart and literate, with style and sophistication to spare. It features a good cast led by a thoroughly believable Arditi. And it is shot in some sumptuous locations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique visual experience September 2, 2013

While the characters and story lines may sometimes drift from Gallic humor to the vapid, the live scenes of the French country side are remarkable and the acting is both educational and clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Wine; A different Criime June 22, 2014
Verified Purchase
A unique series with the premise of using a wine expert to decipher evidence from grape beverages. Beverages, because each episode features a different wine, and even the wine-based cognac. Each episode also features a different wine region, so along with the wine, you get beautiful scenes of the countryside of France. The acting is excellent, and the characters have wonderful complexity. Get both seasons. The characters develop over time.
