5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Installment February 1, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
When a vampire serial killer starts rampaging through the city, Menolly knows it's only a matter of time before the humans start fighting back in retaliation, putting all vamps in danger. She sets out to stop the killer before he finds another victim, but when the group tracks him to a section of the city with some serious poltergeist activity, she quickly realizes they are way over their heads. She seeks out Roman, a ancient vampire, and asks him for help. He agrees, but his price comes at a shock to Menolly. Never would she have thought she would have caught this ancient's eye, but now he has her in his sights, and he doesn't want to let go.

Menolly has grown so much from the beginning of the series. In fact, all of the girls have made a lot of character progression, but I think Menolly may have grown the most. In this book, she seems to finally be accepting herself; all of herself. While her werepuma lover, Narissa, has a lot to do with her self acceptance, it's Roman that gets Menolly to take that final step. By being someone who can handle her when she lets herself go completely, it is almost like a huge burden is lifted off her shoulders. Before him, she had no one to allow herself to simply let loose without the fear of causing serious damage. I'm glad she will be able to balance all of the sides of herself and finally be at peace.

Due to Delilah's injuries from the previous book, we don't get to see too much of her in this one. However, as much as I love seeing all three girls worked together, Delilah really earned her rest, and I can't complain about her taking a back seat. That being said, both Menolly and Camille get their own set of troubles, and man some of them are doosies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Review contains spoilers May 8, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

Menolly is a former acrobat and spy, who was turned into a vampire by a demented sire. Although born half-fae, she lives on Earth with her two siblings. They have a charming Victorian and fight crime along with their various friends and love interests. She is bisexual and has a long term relationship with a were-puma named Nerissa. She also has begun to date a vampire named Roman on the side.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I found it quite entertaining and I thought some of the characters were well portrayed. For instance, I adore the sisters Menolly and Camille. I like the demon twins. I like Trillian and Morio. Iris and even Maggie have grown on me. I'm interested in these characters, and want to know what happens in their story arcs. Menolly's book also has plenty of action and there is a nice balance of action and adventure.

Good Points
* Menolly is a tough cookie. She can take care of herself, but isn't afraid to show her feelings.

* There is plenty of action. Even though she has a big handicap (she's undead and has to drink blood and sleep during the day), Menolly still manages to do her share and more of investigating crime and taking down the bad guys.

* I found the subplot involving Vanzir and Camille shagging interesting. I am curious to see how that bombshell plays out.

* I was sympathetic to Morio and his injuries, and glad he recovered. Although I am curious about the consequences of the injection of vamp blood.

* I liked the author redeeming Wade.

* I appreciated the break from the `daddy hates Camille and now we hate daddy' plot device. It just seems overwrought to me.

* I like that Nerissa seems fairly normal for a girlfriend.

5.0 out of 5 stars super urban fantasy February 5, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Like her two half-fae Sisters of the Moon sisters (Camille the witch - see Bone Magic; and Delilah the werecat/werepanther - see Harvest Hunting) Menolly D'Artigo the Vampire has resigned as an Otherworld Intelligence Agency field operative. The trio believes they will have more flexibility and less bureaucracy fighting the Otherworld invaders. Meanwhile she and Nerissa the werepuma are in love.

However, Menolly also cannot sit idly by when she learns a vampiric serial killer is murdering hookers. She fears the backlash by humans to vampires and other paranormals, so she plans to act before the mob mentality sets in. Tracking down the killer should be as all she has to do is follow the blood trail. However, nasty ghosts get involved mucking up her investigation. Menolly asks powerful vampire Roman to help her find the predator. He agrees for a fee; she must acquiesce to being his consort even as his mother ancient Vampire Queen Blood Wyne is returning to gain control of the undead population.

The ninth Sisters of the Moon urban fantasy is a superb thriller that continues to be fresh by the rotation of prime focus between the siblings. This time Menolly the most complicated sister with her extreme mental issues is caught up in her new world of vampirism. This forces her to choose between the lesser of evil at a time in which her species breaking into a bloody civil war seems imminent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great series - one of my favorites February 23, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is definitely one of my favorite urban fantasy series. Although not completely convinced after book one, curiosity got the better of me, and the characters in this series have subsequently continued to grow and leave me excited for the next adventure. They are fun, fast reads and Blood Wyne was no exception being told from the point of view of Menolly, the youngest of the three sisters. Menolly happens to be a five-foot-one acrobatic bi faerie turned vampire with a soft spot for gargoyles.

I would recommend reading the whole series, though the book can be read as its own entity. Pure, fun, pulp fiction. The reason I gave it four stars rather than five is 1) Delilah is my favorite sister; her POV books get the 5 star rating ;P 2) this is definitely fun fantasy, not Dostoevsky and 3) the sex scenes are a bit too run on and graphic for me, but for some people that would be a plus, and anyway I can just skim those pages to lead me right to more urban-fantasy-action-adventure-save-the-world-from-evil good time read. I like this series as a break from all the hard headed macho women in many of the other urban fantasy series, who can really get on my nerves. I gave up on Anita Blake after book 5 because I just wanted to punch the woman. The D'Artigo sisters have a certain softness that is quite a relief, yet I still get my shapeshifters, vampires, faeries and more. Totally excited for the next installment!
