Amanda Carlson's Novella is a action packed pre-story to her upcoming Trilogy of books. Jessica McClain is a human living with her werewolf twin brother & her father in a compound. She wants her own life & fights for it daily with other pack members who are threatened by her existence. Being the only female ever born to a human werewolf there is a Myth that she is a danger to the werewolf race. Can't wait to read the first book, Full Blooded that will come out this Sept. Jessica is a strong heroine with an attitude and should be exciting to follow in her path through her unusual life.

This was one hell of a start for this new series. Amanda Carlson's debut of the Jessica McClain series promises action packed novels with a kick ass heroine. After reading this and the added excerpt for Full Blooded this was more a prequel. A short story laying the ground work before taking the story to new heights. Jessica is a freak of nature, the only female werewolf, prophesized as the Daughter of Evil that will one day be the werewolves downfall. Also the daughter of the Alpha, she has been protected the best she could for years, but as of late the attempts are escalating. Unable to shift, and not truly one of them leaves her in a very dangerous position. Jessica knows what this means for her future, and she is determined to live. To survive she must find a way out. With her death on the horizon daily she must convince her father that she must leave and start anew. Unfortunately, with the Alpha for a Father convincing him is proving hard than anticipated, and her time is running out. I love stories with strong and independent woman in the lead. Jessica McClain promises just that with her spunky and witty attitude. This was a very short story of about forty pages; which was not near enough to sate my appetite for the promised story. . I can not wait to read Full Blooded in September, and get a real taste of what this series is going to offer.

This "prequel" does its job perfectly--it draws us in immediately and by the time its action-filled pages end (all too soon), it has us hungry for more. If the trilogy to come is anything like this novella, Amanda Carlson will be a literary force to be reckoned with. Jessica McClain, Carlson's heroine, is also a force to be reckoned with. She's tough and smart, witty and charming. If you're a female, you want to be like her--except for that wolf part. If you're male, you'd want to be with her--except for that wolf part. You get the feeling from the book's opening lines that this young person will somehow prevail, but you can't imagine how. All you know for sure is that it's going to be one helluva ride. Bring on the trilogy.

My Rating: 3 stars: Liked it, but I had some issues - recommend (B)

Blooded is a prequel novella set in a new urban fantasy series by Amanda Carlson. The short story outlines a few days in our heroine's life just after her nineteenth birthday. Jessica is the only female to be born into a shifter wolf clan. To top it off, she's human. The wolves all believe she is the evil female of legend who will bring about the wolves' destruction. Since Jessica's father is the alpha leader of the pack, the threats to her life were kept to a minimum until her eighteenth birthday. But there is a strong contingency of wolves who are willing to die to see Jessica's life ended, so Jessica hopes to hold them off some by picking a fight with a hot-head wolf. When that doesn't work, Jessica begs her father to have her sent away so that the wolves will settle down.

I really like the premise of this new series. It's original and holds a lot of potential. I want to find out more about Jessica's history and how she will do out in the world. I hope to learn more about the legend that paints her as a witch - and find out if she is in fact, the Daughter of Evil. The story flowed smoothly and quickly. It was action-packed and a bit bloody.

Blooded is a world-building, set-up novella. The shortness of the story gives the reader just a small taste of what is to come, but it felt incomplete to me. I felt that there are a few points in the world-building that were unfinished and left me with questions. For example, we learn how Jessica wants to be sent away so that the wolves can live in peace. What I don't get is if the wolves are all males, don't they have to mate... with human females? So why doesn't Jessica spend time with the other females?

So excited about this new author! She fortunately came into my life through another author I love, Amanda Bonilla (who also has great taste in books), so I was super excited about reading this novella. And I have to say that after reading the novella I am totally excited about her full length book!

The concept is actually pretty cool. But to start I should mention that this series is primarily made up around werewolves (yay), but Carlson offers her own unique take to werewolves. There are no females. I really like this about the book, I think it makes her main character Jessica, all the more strong. Sure she doesn't have all the skills that a werewolf has, but in order to survive in this world she was born into she had to be strong emotionally and let me tell you she is quite tenacious. Something I happen to love about Jessica.

This novella is just the perfect amount of the action and information to make you really want to read a full length novel. Literally after reading the last words within the novella I thought to myself, "holy cow, the "blank" has hit the fan and I wanna see what happens to her next!". On the plus side I have scene Carlson's release schedule so we won't have to wait long for her books to come out, and I do mean books, plural.

The novella is only about 20,000 words so you really only get a glimpse of the world that Jessica lives in. But I want to point out that the one thing I was pretty excited about when I was reading the novella was that the world does not only contain werewolves. I love it when you have a whole world of different kinds of supernaturals. I can't wait to see how they are all going to come together and interact with the character of Jessica.

So long story short, I think Amanda Bonilla was right, this series is going to be a big hit with the werewolf loves out there. I would recommend this novella to anyone, it's a quick read, but it's a fun and oh so very action packed novella, so go pick it up!
