Rocky Meets Bloodsport, With a Limited Talent Pool, March 17, 2006
This review is from: Bloodfight (DVD)
Some quick stats for fans of martial arts films. Body count: 1, with 2 ambiguous. Nude scenes: 0. Best (only) death sequence: Neck snap. All spoken dialogue is English.
Whether you're a fan of plot or a fan of action in martial arts movies, this film will disappoint. The acting in the movie is amateurish, save for Yasuaki Kurata (plays Masahiro Kai), whose acting is respectable in a sea of obvious low-budget casting. The characters are, for the most part, poorly developed and forgettable.
The fight sequences are fakey at times, poorly choreographed, and rarely last longer than a few seconds. The only fight scenes of any respectable length are Simon Yam vs. Bolo Yeoung, and Yasuaki Kurata vs. Bolo Yeoung, otherwise known as student vs. bad guy, and master vs. bad guy.
The plot is a nothing complex or unique: Student dies in tournament, and master reenters the ring to avenge him. The master's comeback is a spitting image of Stallone's training and comeback in the Rocky series.
You may enjoy the many eigties culture aspects of the movie, such as a gang of punks including a slick haired, jean jacket clad, black shades-wearing leader.
Bottom line, there are many martial arts films to go through before you need to resort to watching films of this level. Any film that would stoop to recycling the plot of a Van Damme movie (Bloodsport) speaks for itself. While the movie is not totally without merit, you would get much better satisfaction from "The Young Master" or "Story of Ricky."

JUST TO CLARIFY THIS, THIS COPIED BLOODSPORT AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, March 7, 2006
This review is from: Bloodfight (DVD)
IF SOMEONE SAID TO ME HEY I GOT A MOVIE WHERE YUSAIKA KURATU AND BOLO FIGHT EACHOTHER ON SCREEN, I WOULD KNOCK THEM DOWN, GRAB THE TAPE, AND RUN TO THE NEAREST VCR/DVD PLAYER, POP IT IN AND WATCH. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH I WOULD FIND THAT PERSON AND BEAT THE LIVING SHI* OUT OF THEM AND LET THEM KNOW THAT HE WOULD HAVE ONLY GOT BEATEN UP ONCE IF THE MOVIE WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD.
BUT THIS IS HONESTLY THE WORST MOVIE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. I GOT THIS IN A DOUBLE PACK WITH CHINESE HERCULES, AND AFTER HAVING WATCHED THIS, I MIGHT GIVE IT A 3/5. BEFORE WATCHING THIS I WOULD HAVE TO DECIDE TO GIVE IT A 1 OR 2. IF THIS MOVIE TOOK MORE THAN 24 HOURS TO MAKE, THEN THEY TOOK WWWWWWWAAAAAYYY TOO LONG.
kURATU IS A TOP 5 ACTION STAR OF ALL-TIME FOR ME, BUT AFTER WATCHING THIS, I WOULDN'T BELIEVE ANYONE THAT HE WAS GOOD IN FIST OF LEGEND MADE ONLY LIKE 4-5 YEARS AFTER THIS IF I WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS FIRST.
SO IF YOU HAVE SEEN FIST OF LEGEND, THEN BUY THIS MOVIE SO YOU CAN NOW SEE THE WORST OF KURATU AFTER SEEING HIS BEST.
THIS DESERVES TO BE SEEN BY NO ONE.

I hate these kung fu flicks of the 80's. The 70's stuff was corny but at least it had a good feel to it. I had this movie before and threw it out. But, I had to re buy because I cannot get enough of the almighty Yang Sze!
Can you imagine Yang Sze on a roll like Bruce Lee? Just devouring everyone that gets in his way. Who would have the guts to make a movie back then of Yang Sze playing the bad guy but wins in the end. It is so stupid how the 90 pound dudes end up taking this guy down. The plot, I know. It is obvious the little dudes rule the world .I know Yang was small as far as height, but he appeared so large on screen and this dude had his own style of Martial Arts. Anyway, this movie is very 80's feel, so If you grew up on this style when you were a kid, you going to love it. The main character has a very good speed and lots of cool moves. He takes on a bunch of bad dudes while he is drunk and mourning. Not a bad gang fight. There is never enough cool scenes with Yang though, and that is to be expected. Why? must be what I stated above? The 'Chinese Hercules' was his best flick by far. It is a 70's flick, infact I scene this movie with 'Return of the Dragon' when it first hit the states back in 74 or so. It is now called 'Way of the Dragon' but when it hit the states after 'Enter the Dragon' it was the thing to do by calling it 'Return of the Dragon'. Oh, no wonder! Yeah, When Bruce was alive, he refused to bring these movies to the states because he knew how tough American audiences were, and was afraid his movies would be far to corny for the American audiences. When he died, movie studios wanted to at least cash in on what they had. The Chinese audiences are very easy to please and they love all the show kind of stuff. The more unreal it was, the better they liked it. We on the other hand, are like, "No way! That is so phoney!"
There are only so many Yang Sze movies out there and I have a few more to get. For those of you in love with the 70's style kung fu flicks, be sure to check out 'The Tattoo Connection' with Jim Kelly. Yang is in this flick but unfortunately, the plot calls for him to be kind of a poor fighter. The main characters of course 'Jim Kelly' and the other dude are really great as far as the kicks. I loved the music in this one and the ladies were not too bad. You would find this movie playing in the redlight district in Manhatten back in the 70's at a all night theatre. 'Taxi Driver' would be the movie playing next door. Can you dig it?!
