This novel succeeds at being something that has all but died out in books of late: fearless. The main character, Talbot Mathias, is so honestly and deeply exposed to the reader that you feel like you're invading his privacy as you read. It's a very intimate and heart-wrenching experience. It is also raw, edgy and utterly horrifying, filled with gore and racism within the vampire nation.

The overlying story is of Talbot, a gay teen who ends his life after being terrorized and then raped by bullies in his high school. After taking the big leap, he wakes to find that life has only ended in one sense, in another, it was just beginning. He enters the cloaked world of vampires and finally finds acceptance for who he is and who he loves, but now he must learn to accept the new part of himself that thirsts for human life.

Within his new family of vampires he finds love, but he also finds secrets and deceit. It is through such deceit that his high school love interest, Quinton, is also delivered into vampirism. Together, Quinton and Talbot work to uncover the mystery of Talbot's birth mother, Carina Mathias. As they dig to uncover her fate, they dig their way straight into a battle between pureblood vampires and created vampires, a war that could mean the end of Quinton and Talbot.

On the surface, this book is about vampires (that DON'T sparkle and AREN'T "vegetarian"), but deep down it's also about humanity and acceptance. I could definitely see this book becoming a cult horror legend.

Bloodlines is destined to become a cult classic. This aptly crafted and lyrically written story of two gay teenage vampires who transcend the mundane world of high school to enter the netherworld of the living dead holds the reader with a well developed plot that climaxes with a truly epic ending. It is a brilliant fourth novel by gifted writer Marcus James that carves a notch for itself on the bookshelf in both young adult gay literature, and vampire lore. Highly recommended.
