Book Description

June 1, 1995
Struggling with personal family problems, Deputy Marty Hopkins takes the case of murdered fourteen-year-old Johnny Donato, whose killer is believed by many to be a wealthy Arizona developer who plans to build a religious community.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in eastern Indiana, this powerful mystery, featuring Deputy Marty Hopkins in her second appearance (after Gravestone), starts with the disappearance of a teenage boy and ends by connecting religious fanaticism of generations past to suffering and murder in the present. Johnny Donato was last seen near the riverside ruins of the New Concord community, a 19th-century sect with utopian ideals and a rigid devotion to celibacy. Leading efforts to restore New Concord, with the help of a church youth group, is developer Bob Rueger, who, Marty discovers, may have other than historical motives. After Johnny's mauled body is disgorged by the river, two more teens disappear, including Rueger's daughter. Other characters include the intriguing Strand sisters: Nysa, with the voice and looks of an angel; and Vickie, with the "slouch of a girl who'd grown too tall." Also involved is a strange but convincing character named Tor, who prowls the riverbank naked, wearing a bull mask. As the river and the suspense rise to a crescendo, Marty endures watery danger of her own before solving this affecting puzzle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, solidly written American whodunit, April 3, 2000

This review is from: Bloodstream (Hardcover)
Carlson is a consistently interesting writer, and this book is another worthwhile effort. Two children are murdered in a rural area of southern Indiana, while real estate speculation and controversy over a historical renovation project provide motives for several potential suspects. The female deputy sheriff, who is the star of the show, is also grappling with her own personal and family problems. All the threads are well integrated into a mostly believable story. The actual solution to the mystery depends on a somewhat less believable premise, but the writing and plotting is good enough to make the book enjoyable in spite of that.
