This review is from: Bloodville (Paperback)
"Bloodville" by Don Bullis is a "Novel" woven and stitched into a real life Double homicide that occurred in "Budville" New Mexico in November of 1967.
The book reads like a journalistic Potpourri of "Mickey Spillane", "Boston Blackie," Dragnet's, "Sgt. Joe Friday", and perhaps... a little John Wayne all rolled in to one. The problem is...this "novel" is no novel...at least to me. Many of the characters are/were real. Perhaps, Bullis embellished on some, and changed the name of some to protect the "innocent" but; he knows the subject, knew the people, and even most of the peripheral subject matter mentioned is real...right down to an Aer Lingus crash off the Irish coast in 1968 mentioned in chapter 10. Bullis writes in a fashion that draws the reader deep into the subject and then, like a fisherman's treble hook, won't release until ...it's all over. Bullis' law enforcement career with the State of New Mexico makes him a perfect author for this type of writing, and understanding of human personalities, and New Mexico Law Enforcement (at its best, and it's worst). He is no stranger to New Mexico politics and its ruthless eviscerating of people's lives and their careers. Perhaps Mr. Bullis should do more of this type writing especially on additional unsolved murder cases throughout New Mexico. There are a great many unsolved ones that need to be addressed (as only Bullis can do), before they are totally forgotten... including the horrendous bowling alley massacre in Las Cruces, New Mexico of 1990. This is a great read, and one I would give 6 stars to if possible. A great book for anyone interested in true crime scenarios, or crime related novels. Thank You Mr. Bullis! |
