4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Awful is Bloody Great!, August 17, 2009
This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
Bloody Awful is the second in Georgia Evan's fantasy trilogy.
Set in 1940, the residents of the village of Brytewood in Surrey are coping the best way they can. Dealing with a possible invasion of the German army, bombings, black out conditions, food rationing and a village full of evacuees would be hard enough for any community to deal with but Brytewood is dealing with something even more ominous. Spies have infiltrated their village and to make matters worse, some are vampires!
What will they do and how can they possibly defeat such vicious foes? Ah, fear not, the residents of Brytewood have a few secret weapons of their own. A couple of Devon Pixies, a weredragon, a witch and now Nurse Prewitt.
District Nurse, Gloria Prewitt has a secret of her own. She is a werefox. Most of the time that doesn't pose a problem since she is single and only has to change at the full moon, but when she meets the handsome Andrew Barron, Supervisor of the secret munitions plant, things become more complicated. As they get to know each other, how can she keep her secret from him? Could she bear to tell him and possibly lose his love?
As the threat of violence increases, the villagers will reveal their secrets and rally together to fight. But can a couple of Devon pixies, a weredragon, a witch and a werefox and a few trusted friends defeat the vampires that threaten them?
Be sure and grab both Bloody Good and Bloody Awful, the first and second of the trilogy. You won't want to miss a word of this wonderful series and will be waiting with baited breath for Bloody Right coming out in August 2009.

4.0 out of 5 stars BLOODY AWFUL is bloody great!, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
BLOODY AWFUL is the second in a trilogy of books by Georgia Evans, set in 1940's England. Not only do the villagers of Brytewood, a deliciously charming community, have to fear German bombs, food shortages and the fate of loved ones in battle, but now there are vampires in their midst! The new village baker is suspiciously unfamiliar with traditional baked goods and that is not all that is wrong with him!
District nurse Gloria Prewitt is competent and clever and changes into fox every full moon. She falls for Andrew Barron but how can she tell him of her monthly midnight forays into the country side on four legs and a red fox coat? What would she do if he turned from her? What would happen if others in the village discovered her secret?
Georgia Evans blends a tale of humor, heat and history in this sequel to BLOODY GOOD. I loved Gloria for her wit and her warmth and her kind heart. I loved being part of the villagers' struggles against the German attacks and I loved how certain among them, Others, revealed themselves to Gloria and each other when they joined together to hunt down the vampire before he play his part in the Nazis' nefarious scheme to bring down Great Britain from within.
I can't wait to read BLOODY RIGHT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Good, August 2, 2009
This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
In 1940 in a small English village, everything looks normal and serene on the surface when they are not being hit by German air bombs. However, many of the local inhabitants are Others including red were-fox district nurse Gloria Prewitt, pixies Alice Doyle and her grandma, Welsh shapeshifting dragon Howarth Pendragon and several who refuse to come out into the open because of fear of deadly retaliation in spite of the BLOODY RIGHT of freedom. Alice was instrumental in preventing a German vampiric saboteur from blowing up a secret nearby munitions plant.

Another German vampire William Block has come to Surrey with the same mission as his late comrade. Gloria is the first to notice the new arrival and his Nazi Luftwaffe support; she tells the others who make plans to dispatch the newcomer to the same hell they sent his predecessor to. The enemy almost kills Alice who tries her magic against this Undead while a furious Gloria vows to stake this fiend who threatens her lover.

BLOODY AWFUL is not an apt title descriptor as the tale is BLOODY GOOD. The super fast-paced historical fantasy story line is filled with stunning revelations and unexpected twists yet most significant enables the audience to believe in were-shifters, pixies and oh my vampires. Her friends and her lover need to protect her although Gloria is a terrific heroine who gains confidence in her paranormal skills as she battles otherworldly saboteurs. Georgia Evans avoids the middle book lack of a deep plot with this strong entry of a mousy fox who learns to roar like a lioness who believes she is BLOODY RIGHT (next tale) while battling a vampire.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first, but these vamps are still incompetent, August 31, 2009
This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
_Bloody Awful_ continues the story of Brytewood, a cozy English village that is secretly home to several supernatural beings. Brytewood's inhabitants, both human and Other, face an ongoing struggle as German bombs fall from the sky and Nazi vampires infiltrate the town itself. It's the characters that make this series compelling. I had issues with _Bloody Good_, but wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to the people I'd "met."

I enjoyed _Bloody Awful_ more than I did _Bloody Good_. This is partly because the copy editing is vastly better. There are a few typos and continuity errors, but overall, _Bloody Awful_ is much more polished editing-wise and reads more smoothly as a result. Another reason I liked _Bloody Awful_ better is that I knew what to expect. The romance would be the most prominent aspect of the plot, and it would be whirlwind. The vampires would be a little anticlimactic. The characters would continue to be lots of fun.

_Bloody Awful_ focuses on Gloria Prewitt, who is a nurse and secretly a werefox, and her budding relationship with Andrew Barron, who runs the munitions plant on the outskirts of Brytewood. Meanwhile, another Nazi vampire has arrived with a dastardly plan and has set himself up as the town baker. Gloria and her friends must stop him before he can unleash a deadly attack on the village.

As before, the World War II setting is vividly drawn. The reader gets a feel for how people must have felt, going about their daily business but never knowing when an air raid might shatter their lives.

I still have some issues with these vampires. I like that they're honest-to-goodness bad guys rather than sexy antiheroes, but I'd like them better if they were a little more menacing. As it is, they bumble too much to be truly scary. In _Bloody Awful_, there's a scene where a vampire has one of the "white hats" unconscious and at his mercy, and suspects she may have vampire-slaying powers, but does he try to kill her? No, he hatches an elaborate scheme to publicly embarrass her. I think he should have spent more time reading The Evil Overlord List.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fun urban fantasy read from Georgia Evans, November 23, 2011
This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
Alice, Peter, and pals must ID a second vamp in their quaint English village. The Germans' plans have suffered a minor setback with the loss of one of their vamp infiltrators, but the remaining three bloodsuckers carry on the mission, this time sending one of their more powerful numbers into Brytewood posing as a baker. Nurse and werefox Gloria Prewitt finally reveals herself, and we learn more about the town's somewhat shady grocer Samuel Worleigh. Meanwhile, Alice discovers that Mother Longhurst has suddenly disappeared, and more Others are revealed.

I'll be sad to see this trilogy end. I've grown so attached to the characters in such a short time. But I'm also anxious to see what happens next -- BLOODY AWFUL was pretty much a one-sitting read for me. Great premise, great writing, and just an overall fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgia Evans' Bloody Awful, July 28, 2010

I loved this entire trilogy. Having lived in England, it is very easy to believe that these people exist, and that "Others" inhabit the villages and are willing to fight evil to save their way of life. Very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading entertainment, October 8, 2009

1940 England isn't want it appears to be. Yes, war is raging all around, but chances are the locals might be more fearful of their fellow residents if they knew the truth about them. Nurse Gloria Prewitt is a werefox, clever and savvy; she changes at every full moon. Toss in a witch, some pixies and a weredragon, and you've got a unique cast of characters in BLOODY AWFUL by Georgia Evans. Gloria has fallen quite hard for Andrew Barron, secret munition plant supervisor, and while she is fully competent and willing to do battle with the vampires who've invaded Brytewood, her biggest fear is Andrew's reaction should he learn her secret.

This was my first Georgia Evans book, but it certainly won't be my last. She's been blessed with a creative flair that few possess. Ms. Evans writes with a rhythm that smoothly takes readers through the story while giving a bit of a history lesson, to boot. I highly recommend BLOODY AWFUL and hope you'll be tempted to check out the entire "Bloody" series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Awful is awfully good, September 24, 2009

This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
BLOODY AWFUL is the second book in Georgia Evans' Brytewood series. This is district nurse Gloria Prewitt's story. As Gloria is going out on her rounds she is hit by a car driven by Andrew Barron, manager of the secret munitions plant in Brytewood that the Nazi vampires are trying to destroy. With a broken leg Gloria is uncertain how she is going to change into a werefox at the full moon. She does not want anyone to know she is different. Not only is she different (or so she thinks) but she is falling in love with Andrew. As the otherworldly villagers come to know each other, Gloria finds she is not alone. Together they work to eliminate the vampires.

As I learn more of the villagers of Brytewood, I am coming to love them. I like how Gloria isn't sure about falling in love with a mortal. The mortals aren't so upset in Brytewood as one might expect them to be when they discover the otherworldlies amongst them. I enjoy seeing how they make do and carry on with life. Who would ever think of making a wedding dress from a parachute? I love the WWII era and this series gives a good glimpse into how people lived and loved during this difficult time. I like how they have a live for today attitude and love and sex are important to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Awful is wickedly fun, August 30, 2009

This review is from: Bloody Awful (Paperback)
Georgia Evans continues her delightful Brytewood series in the novel
Bloody Awful.

District nurse Gloria Prewitt is dedicated to her job. She is honored and cherished by her friends and those that she helps. Gloria knows things will change if they ever catch her furry foxy self running thru the woods. But Gloria has more to worry about then her shifting when evil vampires run amok during WWII England.

With Danger closing around her and her friends, Gloria finds herself attracted to plant manager Andrew Barron. Can Gloria with the help of her gifted friends stop the plans of the vampires and their allies? And will Andrew still lover her fur and all?

Gloria Evans pens a wickedly charming and fanciful tale in Bloody Awful. Set in WWII ands another layer to the wonderful cast of characters. I am looking to the next book in this series, can't wait to see how the town folks take care of the enemy..
