Richard Wheeler's personal account of his and his platoons training and battle on Iwo Jima leading to the first flag raising. Wheeler is wounded before the flag is raised. The personal thoughts of a Marine in combat are told along with heroism of Marines who fight for and inspire each other while absorbing thier persoanl losses of each other.
