Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Meron, a scholar of international law who has published books on human rights and international law as well as Henry's Wars and Shakespeare's Laws (Oxford Univ., 1994), explores the broader significance of chivalry and the literary origins of modern humanitarian concerns like the Hague and Geneva Conventions. Meron uses Shakespeare's plays to illustrate 16th-century attitudes toward war, the treatment of women and prisoners, and the necessity of just war, arguing that the chivalric code moderated the behavior of the combatants. Meron's language is clear and accessible, and he provides background information that places his ideas in context. Organization of the text is loose; chapters function as essays examining one idea related to the central theme. A useful supplement to larger public and academic libraries with Shakespeare and military history collections.?Shana C. Fair, Ohio Univ. Lib., Zanesville

Review

"Meron's language is clear and accessible, and he provides background information that places his ideas in context...A useful supplement to larger public and academic libraries with Shakespeare and military history collections."--Library Journal

"A scholar of international law with interests in human rights, history, and Shakespeare, Meron has written one of the best, a book that will interest readers in these areas and beyond....Highly recommended for readers at all levels in numerous disciplines beyond literature."--Choice

"This is an attractively written and very readable book....No better guide could be found than Meron's book."--The American Journal of International Law

"Meron's language is clear and accessible, and he provides background information that places his ideas in context."--Library Journal

"A remarkable book....Demonstrates not only a mastery of Shakespeare's canon, but also a thorough knowledge of the Bard's sources and contemporaries. The book is exhaustively documented, argued with balance, and absorbing to read. If one reads Bloody Constraint with the spirit of Meron's thesis, namely seeking inspiration rather than technical direction, it is nearly faultless."--International law and Politics

Format: Hardcover
On the heels of Henry's Wars and Shakespeare's Laws comes yet another brilliant collection from that pint-sized ball of fire, Professor Meron. Whether reading your official version of Shakespeare or another version, Meron offers insight into the chivalric themes present in these brilliant plays. Or something like that. Whether its Troilus and Cressida or Henry V, Meron is better at 8:30 in the morning than the New York Times.
