4.0 out of 5 stars If you're tired of wizards and vampires..., December 21, 2009
If you're tired of wizards and vampires, try this book. It has magic, but not like Harry Potter. It has a "monster" but no vampires. So what DOES it have? Grace, who cleans houses where murders/suicides/etc. have happened and then sells them and Poppy (real name Winterdawn Oakblade Strongwill), the son of magic users who lived to "save the world." Poppy didn't like that life and has been "clean" for three years until he and Grace meet unexpectedly to combat the same enemy -- a golem. If you don't already know, I'm not telling you what a golem is. But Gratt supplies the background information we need. It's really refreshing after all the vampires and wizards. Poppy isn't a wizard, he's a Magic User and he doesn't carry a wand; he's the janitor at the police station. After he and Grace defeat the golem (but you KNEW they would, didn't you?) he begins to think that maybe he should go back to using magic, just not like his parents did, you know, keep control, continue to live his normal life.... With the title Bloody Foundations (as in buildings AND partnerships) and with Poppy thinking that he might do some magic using again, I expect to see a series based on the Grace and Poppy team. I understand that Gratt's second book isn't a sequel. I sure hope he decides to turn Grace and Poppy into a series. They're fun people with great adventures!
