From School Library Journal

Grade 11 Up–In 1999, war breaks out between a newly fascist Europe and the Allies of Britain and America. Thirteen years later, a stalemate seems permanent. Two mercenaries, alcoholic Bloody Mary and Britannic-cliché-spouting Major, emerge from the prewar days and join forces with the Allies. They encounter a fighter for the Euros, who seems to die in every battle yet always returns intact. Moreover, he keeps killing even when his head is blown off. Mary and the very amusing Major rendezvous with the man, crossing paths with a wine-obsessed fellow mercenary. Whoever wins will tip the balance of the war, and the battle goes into the stronghold of Rochelle, the fascist French dictator. Bloody Mary has strong plotting and powerful imagery with many elements of great graphic novels: the war backdrop, the lone traveler hero, the sarcastic sidekick. Although the final half switches to a religious cult in America, the personalities never change and there is continuity among them. Also, there is character development, some of it both funny and touching. Strong, graphic language and sexual content are included.–John Leighton, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

2.0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful, August 8, 2011
This review is from: Bloody Mary (Paperback)
2012 and the world is a different place. Europe has become a dictatorship and is at war with Britain who has joined America as the 51st state. Britain is losing the war but a small group of guerrilla fighters is out to assassinate the European leader and end the war.

"Bloody Mary" is as close a book to Garth Ennis has ever done on autopilot. The dreary dystopian future, the mandatory violence, the uninspired heroine, and the overall story is handled with the utmost lack of ingenuity. Mary's backstory is a snoozer as is the "villain" of the story who is easily dispatched.

Ennis' whacky characters that he usually employs in his books are present here in the form of "Sarge" a stereotypical Brit and "Vatman" a hitman who loves wine. I can't believe I finished this book.

Besides the story of a bad guy out to kill everyone in the first book, the second story has an utterly ridiculous pseudo-religious story that's barely thought out and even Mary's reasons for taking on the mission are paper thin stupid.

Carlos Eszquerra's art is good but his character designs have always been limited and he doesn't do anything here beyond his usual standard.

Ok art, poor story, crap book. If you're a Garth Ennis fan wondering why you've never heard of "Bloody Mary", it's because it sucks. Read anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Hell, its Bloody Good!, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Bloody Mary (Paperback)
Another classic Ennis in the world of war. Great sympathetic anti-hero in Bloody Mary. You've got to just love "The Major!" I wish Ennis would give us a big series featuring "The Major!" He is a classic British war hero, with all the qualities that endeared Americans to the "carry on" and "stiff upper lip now" old British war heroes. A bloody good read, plenty of blood and bullets, and the warped humor only Ennis can write. Way too strong for kids. Monty Python fans will hail this as a classic.

I regard PREACHER as the best thing that every happened in the world of graphic novels. Ennis is a macho romantic, with enough sense of humor to take things only serious to a certain level. I wish I could give 3,5 stars.
