Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Although Garcia-Aguilera, like her sleuth, Guadalupe ("Lupe") Solano, has worked as a Miami PI, her first effort has more melodrama than mystery. Lucia and Jose Moreno were happy when their high-society lawyer arranged a no-questions-asked adoption; but now that their daughter's life depends on a bone-marrow transplant from her birth mother, he's no help. So they've come to Lupe, a Mercedes-driving, Beretta-toting daughter of Miami's Cuban American elite, who taps a wide network of friends and lovers in her effort to find the child's biological mother. She succeeds, but at a price. Not long after Lupe realizes that she's being tailed, a man is killed. Then luck delivers Barbara Perez, a link in the illegal-adoption chain, and Lupe must overcome the woman's hostility and persuade her to undertake a dangerous journey. Lupe and her eccentric family (a bodybuilding cousin; a dad who keeps a boat provisioned for the day when Castro falls; a sister who's a nun) have a charm that bodes well for future outings. But this caper suffers from the pivotal role of circumstance. TV rights optioned to De Passe Productions.

From Library Journal

This first novelist incorporates standard mystery formula with great success by adding her own subtle twists. Young private investigator Lupe Solano, who belongs to a wealthy, Miami-based Cuban-American family, struggles to locate the birth mother of an illegally adopted baby who needs a transplant. But before her search yields any answers, a murder occurs. Fans of Edna Buchanan should enjoy this adventurous, refreshing, and alternative view of Miami.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, March 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bloody Waters (Paperback)
I enjoyed the book. Lupe Solano is more entertaining than most PIs, and the plot was fairly interesting. I was glad that Lupe's escape from Cuba wasn't filled with the comic-book type heroics that plague most novels. I especially enjoyed her sister Lourdes.

I was a bit put off by Lupe's love life, or rather, her sex life. She sleeps with men to satisfy her biological needs, to get information from them, and to thank them. I don't like male characters like this; I would have expected better from a female author.

I appreciated the look at the Cuban culture and the fact that Lupe Solano was so passionate about being Cuban; it was curious, though, that none of Lupe's three bed partners was himself Cuban.

I will probably try another Garcia-Aguilera book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., March 29, 1997

This review is from: Bloody Waters (Paperback)
The plot revolves around the selling of babies and has a lot of potential, but the story line is completely predictable (even though I haven't read this author before) and sounds very much like Sara Paretsky and others: Female P.I. is tough, has to prove herself, gets into personal danger near the end of the book, gets out of danger, uses men for sex and information, etc. Not very innovative or interesting

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Reading, June 19, 2000
This review is from: Bloody Waters (Paperback)
An easy reading, fun book. Particularly interesting if you are familiar with the Cuban American culture and South Florida. A simple suspense novel that follows the goings and comings of a young and hip Cuban American private eye.
