Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2013 release, the third album from the Austin-based band fronted by songwriter Casey McPherson. Alpha Rev had a brief fling with a non-indie label in 2010 when the band signed with Hollywood Records, a label distributed by Universal Music, for the release of their album New Morning. in 2011, Alpha Rev reached out to their fans to fund the recording and release of City Farm: Roots, a collection of songs that featured minimal studio production.

Lexington: (5/5) A morose battle hymn. A beautiful start to the album. Classic Alpha Rev. "Lay one flower upon the stone. One last kiss to send me home."
Crystal Colorado: (4/5) One of the many songs with lyrics dealing with nature. You barely notice the chorus coming in. It's good, it's just an "average" Alpha Rev song. Similar to "When Did I Wake Up".
Sing Loud: (5/5) Their first single released from the album. This song's along the lines of "New Morning". No surprises here, but, nonetheless, a solid hit about love. Again, nature based lyrics.
Lonely Man: (5/5) Something a little different from Casey and crew. A taste of country is much more prevalent in "Lonely Man". This song is packed with angst. The ending surprised me. We hear Casey like never before - chills. If it weren't for the ending, and the song progressed without variance it would've been more of a 4/5.
Black Sky: (5/5) Such a peaceful melody, picture warming up near a campfire on a cool night.
Highways: (5/5) A cool sounding song - a lot of weird sounds in this one, but I like it. Chorus hits you like the one in "Sing Loud" does. And the end of the song is a battle cry for renewal. "Wake up the child, let the soul ring on. Living every moment like you haven't got one."
Eden Home: (5/5) The album takes a slower pace in this song. I think the chorus is wonderful. "Take me back, and there's my Eden. I don't plan on ever leavin'." Again, escape and nature are extremely prevalent throughout the album. This is a road trip/country-living album.
I Will Come: (4/5) "There's a place for you tonight." This song is a little awkward to me, not in a bad way necessarily. Positive lyrics/uncomfortable instrumentals. Solid song though!
When You Gonna Run: (4/5) A very sweet chorus.

Don't know how this recommendation came about but great buy. Really like the whole album then did a little research and didn't find much out about the album and not a whole lot about the group. Soulful is how I would describe the album, unique and old-school at the same time. Unlike most of Amazon's reviews I reserve 5 star for albums that stand the test of time: Dark Side of the Moon, Physical Graffiti, etc.. so I don't know if this album / group will join the elite bands of the day but..

I heard this band performing on XM radio. I bought this album after hearing them, and after listening to the entire album I must say, I think every single song is really good, how rare, I usually only buy singles because most artists only have 1 or 2 songs on an album that I'll like, not worth buying the whole album. I don't think I had a favorite on this, they're all good. Glad I bought this.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this album and love it more with each listen. I learned of the band's founder, Casey McPherson, from another project of which he is a member - the band Flying Colors - and thought I'd give Alpha Rev a try. This is the latest album from the group and it certainly excels beyond the two preceding albums by the group. I'm not going to give a song-by-song analysis, but I will simply recommend the album.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the second song just doesn't belong on the album, in my opinion. It's just not a good song and does not measure up to the strong tracks that surround it. As a side note, I saw the band live as they toured in support of this album, and the show was fantastic; they're great live performers and very personable if you get the chance to stay after and chat with them.

I like everything about this cd.The arrangements and melodies are complex and rich. You can listen on a surface level and just enjoy the sound. But, there's personality and point of view behind the song subjects and lyrics. Casey McPherson has maybe the perfect male voice. I play the whole cd and there's not a single song that I skip over, which is unusual for me.

Bloom by Alpha Rev is an excellent and in places, compelling album. Most of the songs deal with the theme of the challenges of soldiers: surviving, returning to loved ones, depression, alcohol and drug abuse, marital discord, divorce, loss of custody, difficulty in making lasting attachments. The drumming is absolutely top-notch. For example, in the first song, Lexington, a soldier is writing a letter home. The drums use the bass to symbolize cannons, and the snare starts with a civil war-era cadence. The rhythm becomes more complex as the song goes on. The phrases and fragments of the lyrics are reminiscent of the language of the times. It is a brilliant song. The third song, Sing Loud, is one of the finest songs written by anyone in a long time. The group is musically very sound. This album is memorable.

I first learned of this band while at the ZZ Ward Concert in Minneapolis and they totally blew me away. Simply amazing to see live. Buy the whole CD, you wont be disappointed.

Each song sounds different, which you'll either love (feels like listening to the radio) or hate, since I haven't been able to "label them" with any particular style. Great sound, great songs.
