Welcome help for the nervous orchid grower,
This review is from: Bloom-Again Orchids: 50 Easy-Care Orchids that Flower Again and Again and Again (Paperback)
OK, first of all I'll come clean - I'm married to the author!
So without eulogizing about how wonderful the book is... Let me just describe what it does and who it'll help. It helps people - like me, actually - who are nervous about growing orchids because we think we're going to kill them. But first she tempts us. judy's pictures have been exhibited at the Smithsonian so of course they're are stunning. They make you want to grow them all, and all the orchids in this book are varieties you can grow easily. And they're easy to find in stores, too. judy visited Home Depot, WalMart and Lowes and local nurseries - I know, I went with her - and also checked on the varieties on sale in other parts of the country. From all these she picked out those varieties we can all grow and all get to flower again and again without special care. She wanted only to write about orchids we can all get easily without having to spend a fortune at a specialist mail order supplier, and only those we can all get to bloom again and again. Of course, they need care and attention so she explains just what each needs, in an easy and engaging style and with the help of some simple checklists. And judy should know, as well as being a former Trustee of the American Orchid Society she's also the author and photographer of the award-winning Taylor's Guide to Orchids: More Than 300 Orchids, Photographed and Described, for Beginning to Expert Gardeners (Taylor's Guides). So there you have it. An inexpensive book about orchids which we can all find in your local store or nursery and which we can all get to bloom again and again. Simple, really.

I have already given this book away to seven friends and keep buying more. This is the perfect book that really helps you know what orchids want, which types to choose, how to keep them alive and get them to flower again.
This is a really pretty book, too. I love the layout with the checklists and boxes, and the pictures are amazing, each of the 50 easy orchids has at least a full page photo, and usually there are also smaller ones too. I love the writing too, like someone's talking right to me. I'm kind of a dope when it comes to houseplants, but this book has really helped me grow orchids. Simple yet full of detail that I understand, and it's fun to read. I recommend this book highly. Where has a book like this been all my life! All my friends think it's wonderful too. It's much better than other orchid books out there for beginners. Don't hesitate about buying it.

I love this book. It is gorgeous, from the full-page pictures in every one of the 50 plant entries, to the pretty layout, to the checklists and more. And what a wonderful writer Judy White is, making orchids easy to understand, inspiring me to go out and buy some more to try. She has chosen 50 types that are the most common to find and buy and grow and flower again and again. I bet this would be a great book to take to the Lowes and Home Depot and Trader Joe's, so you can look up the plants in bloom there and decide which ones are right for you. In fact, I think I'll do that. There is lots of great information about general orchid growing, including 10 Best Tips for Growing Orchids, and then most of the book are the detailed entries for the 50 recommended types. She has a great writing voice, so that I found myself chuckling more than once. (She writes at one point that if I don't have any Phalaenopsis orchids yet, I should run out right now and buy at least one - and here, take her car.)
I've had this author's other book, Taylor's Guide to Orchids: More Than 300 Orchids, Photographed and Described, for Beginning to Expert Gardeners (Taylor's Guides), for years and years, and still use it often as an essential reference, and have recommended it often. This new book, Bloom-Again Orchids, is going to be make great presents for friends, orchid-growers or not, because it's so inspiring, great to look at, and good for beginners as well as the more advanced. I can't believe I got this new from Amazon for about $10! Amazing bargain. Get this as soon as you can, and buy another for a gift.

Enjoyed this book very much, it's nice to know which type of orchids are the fussiest, which are the most forgiving.
She is a very enjoyable read, you can tell she loves her plants and they give her great joy. It is thin on exact cultural requirements; however she steadfastly recommends the AOS for more info. This is a book that would hold the interest of even the most timid horticulturist.

This book outlines the steps needed to become better at growing orchids. Each description about the orchid includes whether the orchid makes a good cut flower, fragrance (if any), light requirements and more. It is a detailed oriented guide for those who are looking for growing easy orchids. Many people believe that orchids are difficult to grow. With this book they are not!

Good but...,
By CW (Midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bloom-Again Orchids: 50 Easy-Care Orchids that Flower Again and Again and Again (Paperback)
The book is well laid out, has useful information and attractive photos. My quibble with the author is the inclusion of Disa as an easy to grow orchid.
Disa needs rainwater, temps and humidity levels that are generally only possible if you live in specific areas of the US like San Francisco. It's really a greenhouse orchid for those with an intermediate level of growing experience. "Easy" is a subjective term. Keep that in mind when making orchid selections based on the author's suggestions and see if other authors like Steve Frowine and William Cullina agree.

I like this book. I am a beginner and this book did not confuse or overwhelm me with information. It has helped me choose which orchids to buy and the care instructions are easy to follow- great for a beginner like me! I find myself reaching for it more often than all the other books I own. I had my first orchid re-bloom this fall- my Oncidium Twinkle orchid. What a joy!
