Missing a Great CD,
By
This review is from: Bloom (Audio CD)
Two years ago I found this CD on one of the players @ the now defunct HMV (miss the store). There was something about it that me wondering why I was buying it. Well, I was moving into my first apartment and I was buying an area rug @ ABC Carpet on B'Way when started playing the album on my portable player. I fell in love with "Face The Waves". I played it over and over while I searched for the perfect rug. The more I heard it, the more I couldn't get away from it. I found the rug and regularly played the cd whenever I wanted to feel comfortable being home. Sadly, I lost the cd when some animal broke into my car and stole my cd's (Portishead, JBs Funky People, Adam F, Roni Size to name a few). Just about all of those can be easily replaced - "Bloom "is turning out to be a bit harder. I've moved about for the past few years and have finally settled into a new place to live. Got the carpet rolled out,but I can't feel happy that Bronagh's voice isn't being played over my stereo in my new home. Its hard to consider dropping the cash on this - but I will if needed. This album is that good.

AMAZING ALBUM,

Bronagh Slevin has a wonderful voice, and the lyrics are incredible as well. Although the entire CD is awesome, my faves are "Life as One" and "Flame". If you can find a copy of this CD, buy it and share it with others! In Fleabay you will find a few singles from the album, but the entire CD is a rare find indeed.

A White Elephant,

A dj friend of mine in Spain gave me a burned copy of this rare and very difficult to find disk about two years ago. Upon the first listen, I fell in love. For those of you listening to the likes of Morcheeba, Portishead, or old Pastel remixes by Kid Loco this is a must have. The sensual voice of Slevin and the downtempo beats of crustation create an immaculate sound. Perfect cd for the first time you invite over that girl you've always wanted to....well you know. Fire up the candles and start up Bloom.

Soothing Trip Hop, Can't Help But Bop,

This album shouldn't be under the pop section. Then again, pop has become such a myriad of genres as of late.Bronagh Slevin's vocals provide the ethereal chill-out forefront against a strong backdrop of electronica and trip hop. You can't help but rock in your chair or bop your head when Crustation lets out the beats then juxtaposes the synths against it. The music just has so many layers! You wouldn't think that they'd jive because you've got bass, synths, electronica and a Gaelic-like vocals (similar to Dido's...I almost thought she was going to break out into "Thank you"). She comes out on all the tracks save for the first one, "Hey" which is purely instrumental--if you can call it that! =) My favorite tracks so far are "Hey", "Face The Waves" and "Purple". All the tracks have a strong pulse, fantastic vocals and perfect timing on the effects. This is the kind of music I'd be playing while drinking wine with friends or just chilling out on the balcony watching the sky. The music is languid, flowing yet rhythmic and pulsating at the same time, albeit a very relaxed pulse. The lyrics are great, poetic, metaphorical and enigmatic. A must buy. Unfortunately, the price is steep. I scoured all over the place for my copy!

One of my Fav Artists,

If Tower Records didn't have this on the machines that one fateful day I was browsing, I really would have never bought this. You have to hear it to really understand why people are so into it. Some say this CD is like Portishead's music, but I don't think it's fair to either of them to say that it's like another artist's music. It's like saying there's only one way to cross a river. Which isn't true. All I can say is that what they've created is deep and powerful, and the lyrics, I find, are intense and have created a whole new depth of meaning for me. There aren't that many artists nowadays who have this sort of ability, and I for one will wait with baited breath to see when/if their next album will be out.

GREAT CD - AMONG THE VERY BEST OF ITS KIND,

If you like "Dummy", of Portishead and/or Tracey Horn's voice (in EBTG's songs or in some Masive Attack songs, like "Protection" or "Better things"), you're surely going to love this gem. A MUST.

Crustation is an experimental band that do not exist anymore, so buying the cd is the only way to listen to them. I do not know the story behind why the band did not get famous, but having a Berklee college of music background, I can say that their music is really good. I listened to crustation first time in a cafe in Istanbul, and promptly asked who was playing. Ofcourse this was back in 1998 when it was easier to find their CD. This album takes me back to those days of late 90s. Maybe my judgement is clouded by all the good memories I have about those days. But whatever, I say good luck finding the album. I have to get back to work...

Awesome Trip-Hop,

This artist definetely needs more recognition, especially in the USA music-field! I have listened to half the album, and I am totally digging these beats - and excellent choice for those who like smooth bass and excellent vocals, and are into the trip-hop field. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews!

The one good thing to come out of Croydon (for me, at least)...,
By
This review is from: Bloom (Audio CD)
Late 1997 I found myself working in Croydon, South London. It wasn't fun, it wasn't entertaining and the commute was a pain in the backside from W9. As luck would have it, an Indie record store in the town had Crustation as a selection in their demo machine, I could ill afford 15 quid at the time and it meant a handful of nutritious meals went by the wayside in favour of pasta & sauce and supernoodles so I could spare the cash...In my view, it's some of the best money I've ever spent, the feeling, vibe, melody, whatever you want to call it made sure the taste of MSG in bad food was swiftly forgotten and replaced with a huge sense of musical and emotional satisfaction...Sadly, they are no more. Gone but not forgotten and still in my top 5 of all time... |
