Book Description

December 26, 2007 4 - 8 years
Bloom isn’t interested in playing in messy mud puddles with other pigs. She’d rather galavant among pretty flowers. Bloom LOVES flowers and other pretty things. She also likes attention. And when a beautiful butterfly, a “flying flower” wafts by, she falls head over heels in love. But she soon learns that attraction is fleeting, and friendship brings a deeper, more satisfying love.

Maria Van Lieshout deftly, gently portrays the true meaning of love and friendship in story and pictures that are perfect for readers of all ages.

Bloom! is a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. As light and sweet as cotton candy, this saga of a pig in love will win over kids and grownups alike. Van Lieshout's loosely drawn pen and ink illustrations, mostly on stark white pages, wring Oscar-winning expressions from the slenderest curves and squiggles. The minimalist text begins before the title page, when Bloom's faithful friend urges her to join him playing in a puddle. The insouciant pig declines, declaring, in type of varying size, that she feels like dancing and singing… and stretching out under the flowers. In a beguiling version of love at first sight, Bloom spies a butterfly, the only blue object seen in a book that features pink font, pink pigs and pink flowers. A flying flower! she gasps, and then bats her eyes at it. After fluttering nearby and wresting a profession of love from Bloom, the butterfly departs, leaving a heartbroken heroine. Van Lieshout's deft use of line comes through in Bloom's distressed dismay, a cross between toddler meltdown and Juliet, which is happily cut short by the attentions of Bloom's faithful swine swain. This paper-over-board book's stylish design and small square format designate it as a natural for Valentine's Day. All ages. (Jan.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Little Pig! January 20, 2008
By G rider
Format:Hardcover
Bloom is one of my new favorites!
I fell instantly in love with Bloom's character. She is someone we can all relate to, as each of us has fallen in love with something in our lives. Children have fallen in love with moments in time, or pets, or their favorite snack and adults with all of the above and more!
Maria has done such a lovely job with her lite drawing lines and splotches of color. The design by Molly Leach compliments everything Maria has created. There is such life and animation in little Bloom. I want to know what she does next..... Will she find a bigger flower to love?
I am sure we can all relate to her young feelings of love. I know both children and adults will fall in love with Bloom. I did.... and I am not quite as fickle as Bloom.

What fun. A delightful book about friendship and love. A perfect present for kids or adults any time of year, especially Valentines Day.
The wonderful illustrations capture Bloom's changing emotions with whimsy and heart. Infatuation, love, frustration, anger. And a satisfying ending the reader can really sink into.
