From Library Journal
Though van Caspel makes his way through all of Ulysses episode by episode, his aim is not to add to "the existing analyses" or to "elucidate any symbolism." Instead he wants to point out "demonstrably wrong readings in the works of commentators and annotators" and offer "alternative readings" that lead the reader back into the text. He knows the novel inside out and proceeds scrupulously and without malice, even demonstratingfor advanced Joyceanshow misreadings have led to mistranslations in the French, German, and Dutch versions. The result is an illuminating and judicious reading of the novel. Some of Van Caspel's quarrels may seem like small points, but serious readers of Ulysses know that regarding this novel, there are no small points.
