Arnett Cobb, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Arthur Edgehill, Wild Bill Davis; these are not fashionable names in "Jazz Programs" at universities. Why? Because they just swing really hard-- they don't play modally, or use "matrix" changes or demonstrate technique worthy of a music-store instructional video.
What they have is soul, soul soul. And they also have something few jazz artists have anymore-- fun. Listen to this and groove.

"Blow, Arnett, Blow," is Rudy Van Gelder production recorded in Hackensack, N.J., in 1959. Whenever I go to play this CD, I get a very satifying feeling that I'm going to be greatly entertained. The jazz musicianship from Arnett Cobb and Eddie Davis is excellent, period! There are only six tracks on this CD but, as I listen to each one, I think that track would be the perfect opening selection. The group's playing is solid and tight. Cobb's solo work is strong and convincing. His trading fours with Eddie Davis adds good dimension to already outstanding performances. Strethan Davis' organ is an excellect replacement for the traditional jazz piano; his break-ins and set-ups are perfectly timed. Duvivier on bass and Edgehill on drums put each tune on its rhythmic pedestal. Some of the highlights include the four-bar tenor trading on the relentless blues "Go Power," a friendly tenor battle on "Go Red, Go," some memorable blues riffs on "The Eely One," and the zesty swing of "The Fluke." It's unfortunate that these tenor masters didn't continue to record sessions like this. Also, the sound quality of this CD is sharp, clear, and resonant. So, I'll keep reaching for this CD. If you're a fan of tenor jazz, you'll love this CD; if not, it will make you one!

I was so happy to receive this CD from Amazon! My mother was thrilled because she listened to Arnett Cobb growing up and never thought she would hear him again. I am one satisfied customer! Thank you Amazon.com!
