According to Bob Dylan, he only needed about ten minutes to write Blowing in the Wind. It went on to become wildly popular, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and ranked as #14 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". And now it has been adapted into a format accessible to children. This picture book is Jon J. Muth's attempt at helping a new generation of readers be as inspired as he was when he first heard Dylan through his transistor radio in 1972. And what a fabulous job he does!

The song lyrics are gracefully accompanied by the most beautiful watercolors. It is immediately obvious how much time and thought was put into this book. The illustrations are done in such a way that they relate directly to the lyrics, but in a natural setting that includes children. I find it extremely clever how the lyrics are the words to the story and the illustrations fit each verse perfectly (including seas, cannonballs, mountains) and yet Muth still manages to make a cohesive story of it.

The very first illustration is of a little boy holding a large red ball, looking out a window at a paper airplane soaring past. This airplane appears on nearly every page and is meant to represent "the answer" that is blowing in the wind. The little boy from the house (clutching his red ball) stares out at the many roads he has to choose from. A girl in a brilliant red canoe picks him up, and they glide across the seas. Three other children join them from various locations, until they are all tossing the ball to each other, with the flags of their nations draped across a cannon.

Physically, the book feels very luxurious. This is an oversized edition, with lovely, large pages.

This is a charming little book for all ages. It includes a CD with 1 track of Bob Dylan's 1963 version of `Blowin' in the Wind'. The book is large enough to share on two laps and discuss what these verses can mean and especially if you are of that certain age you can share what this song meant to you and where you heard it and sang it yourself.
The watercolour pictures are lovely and well done.
This is a book that many, no matter what year they were born could enjoy.

I bought this book because I love the work of Jon Muth. This is a very gentle way to open a discussion about peace and social justice.

How many times
must a man look up
Before he can
see the sky?

The answer, my friend,
Is blowin' in the wind
The answer is
blowin' in the wind.

Bob Dylan's iconic song, Blowin' in the Wind, comprises the text for a beautiful children's book by artist John J. Muth. Muth has taken the lyrics of Dylan's song and matched verses to his paintings. All of the pages have a soft outdoor scene consisting of pale shades of blue, green, gray, and white. Each spread has at least one child holding either a red balloon or a red ball, while following a white paper airplane that continually soars through the air, always leading the children on their journey, never touching down.

One young boy with a red ball joins another child. Two children drifting down a river, with a red balloon, pick up the first two kids in the next spread, all still follow the white plane airplane. These kinds of scenes continue to the end of the book, until only the paper plane flies further and further away.

I was a young kid in 1963 when Bob Dylan hit big with his song Blowin' in the Wind. I was not yet in kindergarten. Still, I remember this song from my older sisters playing it in our shared bedroom. I believe it turned into a political anthem at one point, possibly for the Vietnam War. In Jon J. Muth's book, the song, transformed once more, takes four kids on a journey which ends vaguely, leaving the meaning totally up to each reader. It is a solemn journey, one shared in peace, harmony, and a caring for others.

The story has patience, friendship, cooperation, and a journey that encompasses all of this and probably a lot more. I think this is one of those rare books where each reader finds his own meaning on the pages.

This book is beautiful. The illustrations are absolutely stunning. However, with that said, I would not consider it a children's book. The subject matter of this song is probably a little over most children's heads, and the book does not help clear it up. I do not mean this negatively, but I do think that this book would be more understood and appreciated by a mature audience. With that being said, the quality is amazing and the cd is an added bonus. Must have for every Dylan fan, young or old...

I purchased this book for an 8 year old girl and she immediately feel in love with it. She plays the song while reading the book and following along with the lyrics. It has given her a great understanding of the meaning of the song. The illustrations are gorgeous. It makes me happy to see Bob Dylan's lyrics live on with a new generation. I would also recommend "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan and Paul Rogers.
