Editorial Reviews

After two consecutive live albums, the Mitchell Trio returned to the studio for their next collection of folk tunes. After losing the battle with Peter, Paul & Mary to issue Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" as a single, the best Kapp Records could manage was to repackage subsequent issues of the In Action album as Blowin' in the Wind to capitalize on the monstrously successful song (record labels continued to have In Action printed on them as the album title). It's easy to see why PP&M's version was chosen; it is much more passionate than the Mitchell Trio's, which is taken at a faster pace, highlighted by a folk banjo. The album starts off with a rousing bluegrass rendition of the traditional "Columbus Stockade Blues" (renamed "Leave Me If You Want To"). But after that, the atmosphere is more sedate, with side one dominated by the three-part madrigal-like "Story of Alice," co-written by Broadway's Jerry Bock (of Fiddler on the Roof fame) and Larry Holofcener. The group's now-obligatory political commentary tune was aimed at Texan Billy Sol Estes in "The Ides of Texas." Each trio member is featured on solo tunes: Mitchell on "Green Grow the Lilacs," Mike Kobluk on "Adios Mi Corazon" and Joe Frazier on "Me Voy Pa Bete." All in all, a satisfying album, but without the liveliness of their previous efforts. ~ Cary Ginell, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Talent, June 11, 2002

So much has been written about the Chad Mitchell Trio's wonderful humor and snappy satire, but what strikes me most after listening to them on CD (after not hearing their music for nearly a decade) is how incredibly gifted their vocals are. I'm not talking about one or two songs -- they consistently sing with a tightness you just don't hear anymore. Of course, "The Story of Alice" (and all of its follow-ups) are fun, but even within them, you hear their voices blending in a way that is reminiscent of classically-trained actors performing a farce: there's no hiding the talent.

The song that really gets to me on this collection is "Adios Mi Corazon." I've never seen it singled out for mention in any review, but Mike Kobluk's solo on this song is simply jaw-droppingly beautiful. I don't believe I've ever heard a song of that tempo sung with such control and grace. His phrasing is stunning, his emotions plain. In an age of screaming vocals and nonsensical lyrics, listening to Kobluk's warm baritone on repeat is like therapy for your ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun music by talented musicians!, July 4, 2001

My mom was a big fan of the Chad Mitchell Trio and started us listening to them when we were young. We loved the songs because they are so silly and fun, especially the Alice trilogy. Now I also appreciate the wonderful musicianship that went into these recordings. This one is a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this music!, June 22, 2000

I grew up listening to this music on vinyl, and enjoyed the music and harmony long before I was old enough to understand the humor in songs like "The Ides of Texas". These songs are still favorites to sing along with. Enjoy!
