5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself for a memorable journey, October 28, 2011
This review is from: Blowing Embers (Paperback)
I finished the book today! There were sections when I could barely stand to stop reading. You did a great job with the story. Being a bit of a Protector(I place myself in Lazlo's character type), I found it VERY frustrating to suffer the attacks on Kiera at every major junction. What is this a target practice? I wanted to rip into those filthy *^%#&'s. Just when she has weakened herself to the point of exhaustion - BAM another surprise attack. Her personal development and growing strength brought it back into focus, though. Thanks for telling a gripping story.

As you dive into the Alternate Alaska, it is imperative to remember that "this too shall pass" just as in this universe. The anger you feel with the performance of the Skani, especially Vrishka's ilk, will make the victory of good over evil even more fabulous. Love is a strong force in our lives; and in this Alaska it is POWERFUL!

It is also thrilling to me to share the joy of a beautiful woman who has curves and strength. Yes I am a believer and will be waiting anxiously for the conclusionary volume. Thanks Laurie, you are a jewel.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will keep reading ..., August 19, 2011

Following hot on the heels of the adult paranormal romance Fallen Embers comes this epic sequel, which pulls us back into the intrigue and beauty that are the world of Kiera and Laszlo.

Given ten days to surrender Fairbanks and themselves to the neighbouring mage Vrishka, Kiera and Laszlo must battle against the odds - and themselves - to survive. However, deception and betrayal soon bring grief, and Fairbanks must decide its fate.

I really enjoyed this book, and I definitely cannot wait for the next one. Once I began to seriously read it (I tend to read piece-meal most of the time due to time-constraints), I couldn't put it down, and only went to bed when I decided that it was REALLY too late for work the next morning - to find that I had a page left to read in the morning (I was reading it on my Kindle for Android). Lauri has a marvellous ability to feed one's imagination with words, and her characters are well-developed, drawing on one's emotions and loyalties, and you will keep reading until you find the answers to your questions - at least, those that are given.

Brace yourselves for the avalanche of emotions that this story will kindle. It is an amazing read, and you won't end the book disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fun, August 3, 2011
This review is from: Blowing Embers (Paperback)
I'm not a reader of fantasy, but this book sucked me in with the first sentence and I couldn't put it down. The characters are multidimensional with real emotions and motives for their actions. The conflict is so real, my gut clinched and there were several chapters where I couldn't breathe. I highly recommend the series to all readers--fantasy genre fans or not.

This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, unable to stop reading until you have reached the ending, breathless!!! The characters you grew to love so much in Fallen Embers, become fuller, deeper, and even more real. It is a book about strength, courage and love. It will make you cry and laugh, and live and breathe each moment with the characters. It's bound to become a book you will read and reread over the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A glorious tale of love and magic, June 20, 2011
This review is from: Blowing Embers (Paperback)
If you enjoyed the first book in the series, prepare to fall in love with the sequel. Here, traditions, cities, people and hearts are all broken in a fast-paced battle set in an alternate Alaska, a story set over just ten days (turns). It follows Kiera's continuing fight to rule her city without the need for slavery and the divisive ranking of mage above shifter, to integrate the splinters of her own deconn while protecting it from others outraged by her ideals, and by the prospect of a female governor co-ruling with an Alak slave. In this sequel, Keira will have her strength, her powers and her love tested beyond endurance - and she's all that stands between her people and the onslaught of the Skani Water Mage - Vrishka. It also explores more of the strange magic that decides each person's place in society - whether Skani mage or Alak shifter; the elemental powers of earth, fire, water and air. And there's more than a twist or two, and unexpected discoveries. But you'll have to read it for yourself to find those out ... :)
