5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised on Amazon
Bought this plug-and-play jewel in place of Blue-Ray RW drive. Not only was it way cheaper than a $200+ RW drive. It was a true plug-and-play player. It comes with a temporary media player (Good for 30 Days with an option to purchase) But with plenty of other affordable and free player programs available, this shouldn't be an issue. Do, if you are only interested in...

3.0 out of 5 stars Add External Power
In my first review I noted that this unit would not play blu-ray disks
but played dvd nicely by simply connecting a USB. I added 5V 1.9 amps to the unit, and it now plays blu ray nicely. In short it appears underpowed for blu ray through usb only.

2.0 out of 5 stars It works, but barely, April 21, 2009

First off i had to buy a $100 program (powerdvd) so that it would play blu-rays and i just assumed that a program like that would have come with the player. Second i am using it on my laptop and it will only play through my laptop speakers. Third to get it to work i have to unplug all accessories from the usb port and plug in the blu ray drive first

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Blu-ray Disc Reader, December 19, 2011

I purchased the "Blu-Ray Player External USB DVD RW Laptop Burner Drive" in order to read Blu-ray discs on my Mac. Although the OS X operating system does not permit Blu-ray disc playback, you can use a Blu-ray drive with MakeMKV to rip the encription off of Blu-ray discs and convert them to MKV format (MakeMKV is a free bata release that works very well). Once converted to MKV format (the process is lossless) the files can be played back on a computer or compressed using a program like Handbrake.

The inexpensive enclosure contains a Panasonic/Matsushita UJ-220 Blu-ray Optical Drive that reads Blu-ray discs and also burns DVDs. Although the drive itself is good quality, the enclosure that houses the drive is made of plastic. Despite the cheap quality of the enclosure, the drive works very well and is a great value for the money.

Update: I wanted to add that I have not had any issues with the drive being under powered and requiring an external power source while reading Blu-ray discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blu-Ray drive for the money., December 8, 2011

I have had this drive for over 2 years and it has worked perfectly with my admittedly light use. I do have to connect both USB cables to get enough power but that is generally not an issue for me. People also need to understand that you will need to BYOS (Bring Your Own Software). Most software players cost as much as this drive so you can't really expect them to include it. You also need to have a sufficiently fast computer to run the blu-ray software.
