Solid Nat Adderly Recording,
By jazz lover since 1960 (Tampa, Fl. and Franklin, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Autumn (Audio CD)
The late Nat Adderly had a problem. He was overshadowed by his larger than life brother Cannonball Adderly.
I heard the Cannonball Adderly Sextet live at my college, Harpur College in Binghamton, NY in April 1962. They were fantastic. Cannonball was very personable in taking the time to provide interesting introductions to each number. ( It is an interesting footnote that after this date folk music completly took over our college concert schedule, with jazz completly forgotten. Of course, I didn't forget it.) Getting back to this recording done in 1983, I think there is parallel. Nat is overshadowed here by alto sax giant Sonny Fortune. Sonny is the star of this recording. He plays with an aggresive and hard edged style. The rest of this group are also stars. Larry Willis, piano; Walter Booker, bass; and Jimmy Cobb are legends in their own right. Larry contributes 2 compositions to this set; Sonny contributes one, and Walter Booker contributes one. They are fine compositions. This recording is one of 2 recorded that night live at the Keystone Corner in San Francisco. (See my review of the other one "On The Move" on Amazon). Don't think I am shortchanging Nat in this review. I thank Nat for keeping this group together for years during the 1980's when jazz was going through bad times. |
