Editorial Reviews

Review

Samuel Colt was a man of vision and the guns he designed were exceptional and are extremely collectable. Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC has extensive archives, dating back to 1860. The documentation we provide in our historical letters to our collectors is invaluable to them. Our records are enhanced by the information and values provided by the Blue Book of Gun Values. We greatly appreciate what they have contributed to the firearms industry. - --Kathleen J. Hoyt, Colt Historian

More About the Author

Best-selling author S.P. Fjestad's involvement with firearms started early since he grew up on a dairy farm in west central Minnesota and started duck hunting at age 10. While working in the IRI (Investment Rarities) Firearms Division during the 1980s, he became the author and publisher of the Blue Book of Gun Values, now with over 1.4 million copies in print. It remains the best-selling gun book worldwide.

During the late 1980s, the author/publisher, a musician with international credits, discovered through experience that there wasn't a good reference book on guitars. After three years of research, the 1st Edition Blue Book of Guitars was published in 1993, and then expanded to the Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars, Blue Book of Electric Guitars, the Blue Book of Guitar Amplifiers, and other guitar-related titles. In 1998, the 4th Edition Blue Book of Guitars won the "IPPY" (Independent Publisher Small Press Book Award) for Best Reference Book.

Blue Book Publications has gone on to win several IPPYs in the Best Reference category with author Dennis Adler's trio of black powder titles, including Colt Blackpowder Reproductions & Replicas, Black Powder Revolvers - Reproductions & Replicas, and Black Powder Long Arms & Pistols - Reproductions & Replicas.

Over the past three decades, S.P. Fjestad has edited and published over 160 books on a wide variety of subjects, including firearms, airguns, black powder reproductions and replicas, automobiles, guitars, engraving, billiards and pool cues, ammunition, and others. One of Blue Book Publication's most recent achievements has been its mobile website, which allows the customer to get his/her information from a mobile device - any time, anywhere.

Additionally, S.P. Fjestad has written and edited hundreds of articles for various trade publications, and the Blue Book of Gun Values may be the only gun book ever pictured in Time magazine and listed as a reference source in the Wall Street Journal. He has also testified as an authority in many professional and legal situations. Fjestad has also been a guest on such TV programs as American Rifleman, American Guns, Guns & Ammo, and Gun Talk TV. Additionally, he posts the weekly Gun of the Week article on bluebookinc.com, in addition to blogging under the heading "S.P. Fjestad's Lethal Blogging." A seasoned veteran of hundreds of trade shows in many countries, the author is now proceeding with caution to determine his next hobby since most of the previous ones have turned into jobs!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have reference, May 1, 2008
This review is from: Blue Book of Gun Values: 29th Edition (Paperback)
Just received my 29th Edition and went through it with emphasis on the section's of most importance to me. As a long term subscriber to the Blue Book of Gun Values, I continue to find this book the single most important reference anyone could turn to on gun values. I guess that is why I continue to see it on tables of dealers at every gun show I go to. I do not know of a gun shop that does not have a copy handy at all times. Likewise, I do not know a collector that does not have his or her nose in this book several times a month. If you buy and sell, or, collect firearms, this book is the most valuable tool you will ever have on pricing.

This blue book is packed with information not found in other gun value books. For the professional this may well be all that's needed, but for a novice it's extremely difficult to figure out which model is which in many instances, and the lack of photo's makes the identification process next to impossilbe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its still the bible, June 5, 2008

This review is from: Blue Book of Gun Values: 29th Edition (Paperback)
For good or for bad "The Blue Book of Gun Values" still is and will continue to be the bible in the used gun business. They do their best to take as much of the subjectivity as they can out of the grading process, but one person's 98% may still be anothers 90%. Small differences in percentage can mean a big difference in values.

That said it is still "THE" book most used in the business. The reader also needs to be cautioned that prices listed are RETAIL prices and not what you can expect to get from a dealer if you are selling a used firearm. Also understand that while this may be a "National" standard, real values can be dramaticly different for the same gun from one part of the country to the next. Sometimes as little as 50 miles can make a significant difference.

Overall it is a great book with tons of useful information. A must for every gun collector and dealer. Just take the prices with a grain of salt.
