5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
A wonderful collection of funky jazz. If you like jazz, and anything funky you're going to love this disc. Simply put, Grant Green is a must. Great cover of the Meters' "Ease Back".

3.0 out of 5 stars Blue Note is either greedy or lazy
How many times can a record label recycle the same material? In the case of "Ain't it Funky Now", this is at least the fourth time it has appeared on CD. Sookie Sookie makes its third appearance. While this is a good collection of Grant Green's funkier recordings, it is only a "must have" for those who don't own too many Grant Green records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grant Green Starter Kit, April 5, 2007

Yes, all of this material is available piecemeal on other recordings and yes, this material covers only a portion of Grant Green's career.

If someone is a Grant Green completist, they will already own each cut, and if someone only cares about "pure" straightahead acoustic jazz, they will not want to own this.

If, however, someone likes the sound of funky soul-jazz from the early 70s they will find some of the very finest which that genre has to offer on this disc.

Each cut features funky rhythms and inventive, bluesy guitar improvisation - all locked into a tight groove. This collection could be entitled "The Best Of Grant Green's Funky Period" because that is what it is.

An added bonus is the hilariously thickheaded set of liner notes by DJ Smash. They're so terrible, they're unintentionally enjoyable.

I enjoyed this collection. If you like funk, jazz, guitar and/or Grant Green, I think you will enjoy it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original Jam Master, November 9, 2005
This review is from: Blue Break Beats (Audio CD)
This is a great sampling of Grant Green's funky jazz cd's. You can get it for a lot less than the three new "Original Jam Master" cd's, and I'd recommend it over any one of them. The song choice is excellent, and there are a couple songs from cd's that are out of print.
