Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Elvis is alive and well, at least in spirit, in these four fun novellas, set simultaneously in time in Memphis at Christmas. "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Amy Elizabeth Saunders brings strong writing, well-drawn characters, and a wonderful way with Elvis lore to the pairing of a starchy, workaholic magazine writer and a vibrant, open-hearted waitress who offers him a ride to Memphis when a blizzard and robbery leave him stranded. In "Always on My Mind" by Linda Jones, a young woman seeks out her former lover in hopes of fulfilling her young daughter's Christmas wish--getting a daddy. Sharon Pisacreta shows how an earnest career woman falls for Elvis mania and a fun-loving music tycoon, in "All Shook Up." And in "Fever" by Sandra Hill, a Wall Street investment banker gets the hots for a local farm girl who poses as Priscilla in an Elvis-inspired nativity scene. All four stories feature the Original Heartbreak Hotel, decorated according to Elvis movies and haunted by the King himself, and are enlivened by Elvis impersonators, Elvis's favorite foods, and an Elvis Santa who knows more than he should. A funny, energetic, and inventive collection that's sure to win over even the most cynical skeptics. --Ellen Edwards

4.0 out of 5 stars A FUN READ, BUT. . . ., August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Christmas (Leisure romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a fun read, really a hoot in many ways. I read short story collections to find new authors to try out. I picked this one up becasue I have read Sandra Hill and really love her stuff, (for one of the funniest time travel romances you'll ever read, try and also because I was raised in Memphis and thought the whole premise to be fun. Amy Elizabeth Saunders' I CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE was just great--Flying Elvi!! But two things kept me from really appreciating this book. One, the authors in mass never mentioned the River at all in their works. And you don't know Memphis unless you understand that the River is a major part of any native's collective consciousness. Especially since Bealle Street, where a lot of the action took place, is all of 6 blocks or less from it. With all these people in the stories coming to Memphis and interacting with all the locals, at least one of them should have gotten to the River. It just wasn't natural. Two, where does Sandra Hill think Memphis is?? Or rather where does she think the Blue Ridge Mountains are?? Has she ever visited the city? Have her editors? Memphis is FLAT. The nearest mountains are 400 miles away near Knoxville. They are called the Cumberlands. There are foot hills around Nashville. . . a long 200 miles away or 3 to 4 hours by car. The Blue Ridge Mountains are in on the OTHER side of the Apalications. IN Ms. Hill's story, she has a native saying "You have to understand that there's something about the air that comes down from the Blue Ridge Mountains. It get's in a Memphian's soul.." The River gets into the soul of someone from Memphis. I doubt that even a molecule of air from the Blue Ridge Mountains gets to their lungs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Treat, February 4, 2000
This review is from: Blue Christmas (Leisure romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Elvis, Memphis and Christmas time...and all four stories in this anthology blend well, giving the reader a dazzling treat for the senses and plenty of laughter. Enjoy reading it with your feet up on the coffee table, an Elvis CD playing and a candy box with the King on the cover.

I very much enjoyed these stories! My interest in romance and Elvis combined! You do not see that everyday. This was a fun book that had me flying through the pages to see what would happen next! I really thought the added details that linked all the stories was wonderful!
