Book Description

9 and upMatty Trescott
Blue Creek Farm is the "prequel" to Matty's War,  in that it tells the story of Matty's life in Kansas before she moves east and joins the army. With her mother dead and her brother off riding for the Pony Express, Matty must help her father keep the farm running in spite of a drought and the dangers of nightriders. Matty learns to cope with loneliness and the intrusions of war as she becomes a teenager.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4-8. This prequel to Matty's War (1999) introduces 12-year-old Matty Trescott, who lives with her father. Matty's mother has died, and her brother has left home in search of adventure, leaving Matty and her father to manage their east Kansas farm in 1860. In addition to the ravages of drought and the general difficulties associated with prairie farming, the Trescotts and their neighbors live in fear that Bill Quantrill and his renegade guerrilla fighters will raid their homes. As the story progresses, Matty matures from an insecure child to a competent pioneer woman ready to defend her home and family against the threats of war. Unfortunately, the characters never seem to come alive: Matty functions as an omniscient observer, faithfully recounting what she sees without actually seeming to participate. The strength of this novel lies in Thomas' careful historical research and extensive notes clarifying what is truth and what is fiction. Two maps are also included, which should help readers follow the events pertaining to the Lawrence Massacre of 1863. Despite the book's flaws, it makes a good choice for classes studying the Civil War and will be welcomed for units on Kansas' history. Kay Weisman

Review

Those who think pioneer literature might not appeal to females should meet plucky protagonist Matty Trescott, who adapts to life in Kansas Territory in the early 1860s.
