4.0 out of 5 stars Guitar Rock Lives
I heard the song Imprint on MusicMatch Radio and added the song to my "Bands to Checkout" list. After checking out the generally strong reviews for this album and their first (i.e. _1000 Yard Stare_), I went ahead and bought it. I'm very happy with it. It seems almost a lost art for a band to make a CD that is listenable all the way through. This is one I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Going For A Different Sound
What a difference a few years makes. On their last record, DD were a straight up nu-metal act with a crunchy, but sometimes dated sound. Blue In The Face sounds life a totally different band. This goes for almost their entire sound, save for the couple of moments, "The Hand" being on of them, where they re-live their harder edged days. Sometimes this change is...

This is one I just put on and hit play. All of the songs have great rhythem, usually catchy lyrics, and they just plain rock. No, it isn't what I'd call nu-metal, or even metal for that matter. Yet, I'll say it again, it rocks.
Everybody wants some sort of comparison to "known" bands, and despite the danger of biases, here's my take, ignoring for the moment that this band (like most good bands) has its own sound. This is just what comes to mind when I try to think of who they remind me of:

Collective Soul + Theory of a Deadman + Candlebox + Econoline Crush + Riverdogs.

Not any one of those, and not the combination of all those together. Just bands (and various mixtures) that I'm reminded of when I stop just enjoying Doubledrive and TRY to find comparisons.
There seems to be a common comment that _Blue in the Face_ is different (disappointly?) than the acclaimed _1000 Yard Stare_. Well, I like this album so I'm off to buy _1000 Yard Stare_. If for no other reason than to support these guys. We'll see if I like it better, the same or less as _Blue In the Face_.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Time Comin', April 29, 2003

This is a definitive album for doubleDrive's arrival back to rock. Unbelievable not more people know who they are by now. Songs like Hollowbody & Freightrain are radio singles waiting to happen. Their first single is Imprint, which is probably the best song on the album. There are so many solid tracks, its to hard to decide. This is quite a departure from 1000 Yard Stare, maybe not as heavy, but none the less impressive. I really love this band and hope for a better outcome than the last record label showed them. And hope for not so long inbetween albums next time around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where art thou?, September 21, 2005

Start to finish, GREAT CD. 1000 yard stare had its moments, but this disc killed. Way different than their debut, for the better. Great, positive lyrics and old-school guitar solos. Imprint, Hollowbody, Even out, Track 7, it's all good. Too bad they didn't stick it out for a third release, but oh well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn off the radio, buy this CD and their first one, September 19, 2005

I don't understand the reviewers who call this band nu-metal or this album a sellout. Yes, their first album was better, but this one is still ten times better than anything on rock radio right now. This band is not popularly successful because they represent everything rock fans have forgotten: Straight ahead rock and roll with intelligent lyrics and actual talented musicians. Not to mention a singer who actually SINGS instead of growling or whining. Today's rock and roll sucks, and this band is a very rare diamond in the rough. Check it out, if you like music rather than mindless blather, this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why are these guys not huge?, June 17, 2005

Unbelieveable album. So's the first one. Both are "can't miss" purchases. I saw these guys at a tiny club in Birmingham, Alabama late one Friday night around 1999 or so after seeing KISS, of all bands. A banner evening of live rock for me.

A friend of mine likened them to Creed (in terms of lead vocals) without the self-absorption. Both albums ("Blue In The Face" and "1000 Yard Stare") offer excellent songwriting and loads of rock. So stop reading this and buy 'em.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lesser known good rock band, June 15, 2004
This review is from: Blue in the Face (Audio CD)
I am grateful I got to hear Imprint on the radio for the short 2 month period my local rock station aired it. I loved it. I soon bought "Blue in the Face" not just for Imprint, but for the songs I would soon come to encounter. I knew there would be more good songs on the album, and I was right.

"Imprint" is a meaningful song to the band. Although listeners can relate to it in many ways, the band tributed it to a lost friend who co-wrote it. It's just an excellent song w/ a message of hope behind it.

"11:59" is a great start followed by "Imprint" and leads to "Hollowbody" which hard hitting rock song that is good for a repeat listen or two back to back. "Million People" slows down the pace for a sort of rock ballad that leaves no room for improvement.

My favorite song is "I Don't Care" which is a fast rock festival of hard hitting guitars and vocals. A great listen to any rock and roll fan this age in time. "Freightrain", another passionately sung song leads to the maybe the strangely titled song "Track Number 7." Guess they didn't have a name for it, but it is appropriate for the sake of the lack of lyrics. More of a myriad of guitars and drum solos.

"Even Out" is a catchy riff that someone who doesn't have this album is desperately missing a good song. The crazed fast hyperactive "Inside Out" flashes by in a blaze of rock and follows by the infectuous "The Hand" that plays a nice storyline w/ the lyrics. Blue in the Face finishes w/ "Big Shove" a sort of acoustical song that sounds like a Days of the New song almost. Not bad at all.

I treasure this album, and don't feel sorry for any rock fan who neglected this album. It is a great collection of 21st rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ROCK CDS TO DATE! A MUST HAVE!, May 26, 2004

This review is from: Blue in the Face (Audio CD)
Definately one of the best Rock/Vocals/Cd/Band I have ever heard. I am a huge rock fan and I know a 5 star group when I hear one! Rock N' Roll since the late 90's has been a digger for all up and coming so called rock bands. Doubledrive delivers the true art of Rock N' Roll!

who this band was for at least a month. I heard "Imprint" on the local College station. It took determination to finally get a hold of a DJ that knew the name of the band but it was worth it. Just edgy enough that I can take them serious. This CD was engineered very well and the snare has that hard hitting punch you can feel. Great songs with sonic excellence! Late breaking news for the "they sold out" crowd. Bands don't sell out, most just grow up. Unlike many of their fans..........

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album with postive message, April 10, 2004
By
This review is from: Blue in the Face (Audio CD)
I bought the album today. Its a very good album with a good variety of rock. I can't help but also notice the positive message it has in the song Imprint. ITs good to find mainstream type hard rock with positive messages. If you like a good creative variety of rock pick this album and check out its variety of sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD Does Rock!, February 24, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Blue in the Face (Audio CD)
Yes, this CD is more mainstream than their first...so what. It is still great front-to-back. Every song is listenable - nothing to skip over. If this CD was a cop-out to produce "radio-friendly" songs, why don't you ever hear any out there? It's great stuff to listen to while driving. Highly recommend it.
