Underrated and magnificent.,
By Jay Matthews (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Gardenia (Audio CD)
Dinah has to be one of the most underrated performers of the 20th Century. Billie, Ella and Sarah continue to garner well-deserved admiration, but Dinah is often forgotten. Perhaps her choice of material was too diverse (blues, R&B, jazz, pop) to please either jazz purists or pop music fans. But her voice, phrasing and style are superb. Her voice has a vinegary edge and an emotional impact that were no doubt shaped by her difficult, reckless life but it also has warmth and soul that are wonders to hear. Genuine, moving and magnificent music.

what a difference,

Yesterday afternoon I was moved in a rare way. I was at a little diner when the radio cut out on the speakers and a new tune started. Someone had popped a quarter into the jukebox and Dinah Washington's voice started "What a difference.." A silence fell in the place as people listened. What a difference. Dinah's voice transported me to a different time. A different pace. Each phrase perfect and honest. What a difference.

Truly one of the best albums ever. Dinah has one of the sexiest voices around -- inspirational & moving. "Soft Winds" is worth the price of the entire CD. If you ever want to impress a date, that song is the ticket.

this is pure mysticism!!somethin raw in her voice hooks you with a clarity for life and love... if you love your female jazz vocalists, then this is somethin necessary, like a lung... if you're unfamiliar with dinah and would like to get to know what she is about, then get this... there is maturity here that you will sometime need in your personal life; that's not to say you MUST have it, just sayin that you SHOULD....

Dinah at Her Best!,

This is Dinah Washington at her best. The CD shows Dinah equally comfortable in a variety of musical settings--a trio, orchestra, strings, you name it and Dinah shines! It's a shame Dinah is not regarded in the same breath as Billie, Ella, and Sarah because she clearly belongs there. Every song is well chosen from her vast catalog of Mercury recordings. This period (mid to late 50's) is also Dinah at her vocal peak. The remastered sound is also excellent.
