"Blue Goose" is a fun board book for young toddlers to learn primary and secondary colors.

When farmer Gray goes away, Blue Goose, Red Hen, Yellow Chick and White Duck decide to paint their black-and-white barnyard. White Duck paints the fence white, Yellow Chick paints the flowers yellow, Red Hen paints the barn red, and so on accordingly. Birds also mix their colors together: Blue Goose and Red Hen pour red and blue together to paint the doors purple and etc. They even paint the grass green and the sun yellow.

The illustrations are very unique and detailed. The birds stand out from the background with their textured color-pencil stroked feathers. On the first page the farm's landscape is all black-and-white, besides the birds and their buckets with paint and brushes. Page by page, the colors appear where the birds have painted, until the whole farm is full of lovely colors - what a nice surprise for farmer Gray! The very last page of the book has a nice chart-drawing of mixing primary colors to receive secondary ones.

What a wonderful and fun way to introduce children to primary colors and the concept of secondary colors. While it may seem simple to most of us, the actual fact is that many children have problems with this concept and any teaching aide which will hold their interest is most welcome and most useful. Truth be told, I know quite a number of adults that have problems in this area also.

The author uses four main characters to tell her story and to teach. We have a white goose, red hen, yellow chick and a blue goose. These four friends live on a farm; Farmer Gray's place and is absolutely colorless....as in black and white. One day while Farmer Gray is away the four friends decide to paint their entire barnyard. Of course each of these critters uses paint of their own color and they begin.

Red Hen painted the barn red. Blue Goose painted the roof blue. Yellow Chick painted all the flowers yellow and White Duck painted the fence white.

Then the animals begin mixing their assigned colors with wonderful results. As an example, Blue Goose and Red hen poured blue and red together and were able to paint the doors purple.

The author Nancy Tafuri, who is also the artist, is good at what she does. The text is simple yet extremely informative. He bold use of primary and secondary colors and her execution of each painting is eye catching, and again...very informative.

This is a good teaching book. It holds the child's interest and actually pours knowledge into their heads.

Thiis book was perfect for my grandson whose favorite color is blue (the reason I bought it) and who is having a bit of trouble with the secondary colors. On top of all that, he was able to read it all on his own, which was an added bonus. When I ordered it, I could not tell what age the book was for. It is a perfect fit.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with simple prose, vivid colors, & a simple variety of farm-type birds. My toddler loved it from the first time we read it, he was just under 1-years-old & he still occasionally pulls it off the shelf at 3 3/4-years-old. This would make a great gift for anyone with a very young toddler.

This book was the perfect speed for my 3 year old son. Not too many words before you turn to the next page. And the colors are bright and clear. I was thrilled when I opened the book to see that it really gives me an opportunity to teach him about mixing colors.

This is an excellent book for teaching both primary and secondary colors. It is simple enough that the kids( my 3 yr old class) can recite it along with me and can also problem solve as we go along.

One of my favorite books from childhood is the Golden Book, "The Color Kittens," and I chose "Blue Goose" because it reminded me of my old favorite. As a child I loved the idea of the kittens mixing paint, and I think this modern book will have the same appeal for today's young children. I know several adults who name "The Color Kittens" as their childhood favorite, and perhaps "Blue Goose" will be a favorite for a new generation.
