4.0 out of 5 stars Still pretty good nearly 10 years after its writing, January 3, 2009

I bought a used copy of this book here on Amazon and found that it is a mine of information, though perhaps not as exhaustive as some guides in this series; China is just too massive and too old--you'd need a 5 volume Blue Guide to cover it in minute detail. Also, this is not the guide you use to find the local party places or cheap hostels, or on the other end of the scale, fine restaurants and shopping. The Blue Guides are famous for educated, scholarly tidbits of history, architecture, geography, art appreciation and this Blue Guide is no exception. Who knew that Confucius' 77th generation descendants was still living (and recorded)...and were Dukes to boot! Or what Jews were doing in Kaifeng in the 14th century!

There are a few quirks, though. For example, Beijing is still referred to as Peking and nothing about Tibet is mentioned. Also, the index is not exhaustive; it only covers people and places mentioned as principle subjects, if they are mentioned in passing in other parts of the book, those are not indexed as reliably. However, for a book that is nearly 10 years old in 2008, it still gives terrific information (for that matter, my Blue Guide to Greece is 60 years old, and I STILL wouldn't trade it!!)
