A Perfect Gem!, December 12, 2002
This review is from: Blue Hawaii (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful collection. I almost didn't even buy this CD haunted by shades of Don Ho. I am so glad that I did, this is a postcard of an idealised Hawaii, a pre Pearl Harbor paradise. This not a CD of purely Hawaiian artists, it is an image of a shared dream. This CD stayed in the multi disc chager for an entire winter and no one in the house minded a bit. If it had the old song about the wireless phone call from NYC "hello Hawaii, how are you?" it would be perfect, but it falls so close to perfect that that is a quibble. All the ASV compilations are good... this one tops the list.

Superb collection of timeless numbers. But beware....., March 31, 2011

The 'Living Era' label has done it again. This CD is chockfull of magnificent Hawaiian music from 1926 through 1942. All numbers are not in the 100% genuine Hawaiian style but nevertheless are great. Plunk this CD into your player, close your eyes, and you are sure to be transported to the islands - even if you have never been there - like myself.
There is one BIG caveat that you should be aware of. I could not rip the CD to my Sony MP3. That is a real bummer since I listen to much of my music while on the go. However, I notice that the MP3 version is available at Amazon for $8.50. But I do think that if I paid for the CD I should be able to rip it for my personal use. I don't know if this was intentional because I have other 'Living Era' CDs that can be ripped for my MP3 player.
Anyway, if you love old-time Hawaiian music you will enjoy this CD tremendously. Just be aware about the MP3 issue.

1920s Old World Hawaiian, December 31, 2011
This review is from: Blue Hawaii (Audio CD)
Nostalgic and remenicent of early times when the Hollywood crowd would cruise to the islands.
Bing Crosby sings on it, but there are other unknown authentic Hawaiian artists that
really make this CD special. It is addictive. It takes you back to when life there was
simpler and very romantic.
