5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I read this book in fifth grade and I still remember it. Something about it really startled me and I think it was the first time I could understand the reality and metaphor of this book simultaneously. After I finished it, I lay on my bed in silence because it had shaken my spirit so much. It's a descriptive and entertaining story, but don't read it if you don't want to...

3.0 out of 5 stars TO TOUCH THE MAGIC!
Although this book seems thick compared weth other YA novels, these 186 pages read easily, thanks to extensive dialogue. Soon-to-be 13 Maggie feels like a "summer hostage" while visiting her father--a court-ordered social ritual which produces recurring
mental anguish ever since her parents divorced when she was six. Clinging to her childhood memories of a game of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Avi has done it again!, February 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Heron (Paperback)
This book was honestly one of the best books that I have ever read. Avi is great at coming up with interesting and diverse families. I could not believe how Avi could come up with caring and emotional Maggie, her raging father, Karen, Maggie`s responsible and loving step mother, and little Linda, who was caught up in the midst of all the fighting and emotion. From this book, you learned all about Maggie, the pressure that was put on her and her family and also the omen, the graceful heron. The question that you are left with at the end of the book is, does the Heron mean life or death? That`s why I liked this book, you must decide.

I thought "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" couldn't be topped. I was proved wrong. This book delivers an amazing story that relates to the world today. Although the beginning is a little slow, you are soon drawn into a magical, yet down to earth story that adults and children alike will enjoy.

I loved the book, it touches the hearts of everyone with the drama portions of the story. Maggie helps the Blue Heron, the boy next door, her father, and most of all herself.

This review is from: Blue Heron (Paperback)
Blue Heron is about a 13yr old girl named Maggie, who's visiting her dad and her stepmom at a secluded marsh. She finds hardship when she must deal with her father's mistakes, but is fascinated and inspired by the mystical Blue Heron. She feels encouraged to face the facts and deal with reality. Very symbolic and deep. A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Blue Heron: An Omen of Life or Death, September 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Heron (Paperback)
Leaving her home in Seattle, Washington, 12-year-old Margaret "Maggie" Lavchek intends to spend her last month of summer with her father, stepmother, and newborn half-sister in their New England lakeside cabin. During her stay, Maggie is captivated by the blue heron that frequents her marshy backyard, believing it to be a magical creature capable of foretelling life or death.

As Maggie copes with her troubled family (her angry father who has recently been fired and refuses to take his heart medication, as well as her young stepmother who emotionally off-loads onto Maggie), she must also try and save the heron from her troubled young neighbor, Tucker, who intends to kill it. "Blue Heron" is a great story of a young girl's attachment to a bird that renews her youthful belief in magic and fantasy. Recommended for readers age 9 to 13.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book that is enjoyable, April 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Heron (Paperback)
This is a great book. Avi is a wonderful author. His text is very well written. I liked this book because it included a girl who was very imaginative. I loved the character of Maggie and her fascination with a Great Blue Heron. Anyone who likes Avi's works or who likes animal stories should try this one. I'm sure they'd enjoy it.
